Council Rebuffs Plans To Change City Charter
Council members criticized Councilman Andy Lake for circulating petitions to revise the city charter seeking a strong mayor system. City Attorney Burns noted only petition draft forms and signature legality require approval. Mayor Kent and others defended the current city manager form while accusing Lake of obstructing government. The meeting also approved a July 4 American Legion refreshment stand and other routine actions.

Joseph A Michela of the Michela firm died early Saturday at Divine Infant hospital after a heart ailment. Born August 13, 1894 in Palms he worked as a bookkeeper, served in World War I, and founded several coal, fuel and lumber ventures. Rites were held Tuesday in Bessemer. he is survived by his wife two sons Dom and Lawrence and daughter Jean.

Mrs Howard Andersons Border town oil is selected for the University of Michigan summer show. several range women received honorable mention including Mrs Anderson and Mrs Richard Ahola Schweig of Wakefield.

Vacation Bible School Ends With Final Friday Sessions
The Vacation Bible School opened June 11 and will conclude Friday morning after a Thursday evening program at Central school. Immanuel First Lutheran and Methodist churches jointly hosted 246 total enrollees with over 200 daily average. Thirty volunteers taught while Mrs Varley Wahlberg directed, assisted by Mrs Leonard Harris and Mrs Gus Rolfsman. Donna Rostallon played piano and nurse Mrs Elliot Doane aided.

Giansante Wins Wakefield Theatre Lease Deal
Mose Giansante will operate the Wakefield theater for three years starting October 10 with a monthly rent of 150 dollars. The city council unanimously accepted the bid, surpassing the previous operator Peter Napel who offered 87.50 monthly. Napel had held the lease for six years with 333.33 monthly average. The city will provide janitor service and maintain facilities, heat at 70 degrees, and cover heating costs. Giansante must run shows five days weekly, pay federal taxes, insure equipment, and not assign the lease without council consent.

Mr and Mrs Earl Gates at 206 Olson Ave marked their Silver anniversary with an open house from 4 to 8 pm. About 50 neighbors attended. Daughters Patsy Sandra and Jean helped with a silver themed reception. Mrs Gates wore a blue dress with red rose corsage. Mr Gates a red rose boutonniere. Gates Ban Franklin Store is their business. Mrs Gates formerly Blanche Woods married June 11 1931 at Macomb Illinois. The family moved to Wakefield in 1942.

Alexander B. Rydeski 54 died Sunday at 3 p m in Divine Infant Hospital after a heart ailment. Born July 3 1901 he worked at several mines and was married to Frances Le Roux in 1937. He belonged to Immaculate Conception Church Knights of Columbus Holy Name Society. Survived by wife two children James 15 Laurel 14 his father Michael of Wakefield three brothers Theodore Roman George and two sisters. Funeral Thursday at 9 a m Immaculate Conception Church with burial at Lake. Taxpayers must begin paying city taxes on Friday July 1. Total estimated levy is 134326.45 dollars with rate 22 per thousand on equalized assessed valuation of 6051298 dollars. State board raised valuation from 3893725 to 6051298, yielding 34.19 per thousand. Collection fees start at 1 percent until August 2 rising monthly to 2 percent, then 1 percent monthly to March 1957 when delinquent taxes go to county. Surplus Food Distributed To 144 Local Families
Surplus foods were distributed Tuesday at the Piggly Wiggly Store to 144 clients and families receiving public aid such as old age pensions aid to dependent children and assistance for the blind. The allotments included 284 pounds lima beans 284 pounds rice 360 pounds processed cheese 448 pounds butter 960 cans dry milk 96 three pound cans of lard 600 pounds corn meal 480 cans pork and gravy and 27 six pound cans luncheon meat.
