Wakefield adopts budget and plans street work upgrades
Wakefield council approved the 1956 57 budget four to one with Andy Lake dissenting. Expenditures total 362 491 50 plus 24 300 transfers. Revenue sources include light and power 125 860 water 40 310 and state sales tax and other funds. Property taxes set at 33 24 per thousand on a city valuation of 3 893 725 the lowest in history. The body discussed a street repair program and portable black top equipment estimated at 9 000 with 4 000 in the budget. The manager was authorized to seek bids and inspect equipment in use elsewhere.

Edward Hellen 17, member of the high school graduating class, is hospitalized at Divine Infant with a fractured collar bone and internal injuries after a light station wagon rollover near the M 28 and M 64 junction on the west shore of Lake Gogebic. Robert Rastallan, a high school junior, was riding with him. The accident occurred about 12:35 Wednesday morning about a mile south of the junction.

Mrs. John A. Maki born Anna Hyppa died Sunday at her Wakefield home aged 76 after months of illness. Born August 9 1879 in Lapua Finland she married William Rosendahl who preceded her in death and later John K Maki. They immigrated to the United States in 1909 settling in Republic then Wakefield in 1918. Survived by a daughter and four sons, a sister and three brothers, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral at First Lutheran Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Drill planned on Mikado mine property at Verona
The Mikado property, tax delinquent for four years and now state owned, will undergo exploratory drilling soon. E. W. Coons Co. of Hibbing, currently operating a Wakefield open pit, is expected to conduct the work. Pickands Mather Co. withheld taxes citing alleged excessive assessment, leading to a May 1955 state tax sale.
