Niilo S Latvala 68 of 455 E Oak St died Sunday at Grand View Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born December 6 1898 in Kurikka Vaasan Laani Finland he married Aili Hautaluoma in 1922. Immigrating to the United States in 1924 he lived in Ironwood Ramsay and Wakefield work in local mines and Connor Lumber. Survived by wife one son one daughter seven grandchildren two stepchildren seven step grandchildren and siblings in Finland. Funeral Thursday at Ketola Funeral Home at 1 30 PM.

Council Approves 1967-68 Budget
At the June 5 public hearing the city council approved the 1967-68 budget with $240 cuts for the city manager and fire chief, reallocating $480 to sidewalk funds. A car allowance and per diem for city employees on city business were approved, and plans for alley improvements, lighting, and weekly department reports were discussed. Also noted were park sticker fees, a health officer report, youth driving concerns, fire department funding help from the township, and Mayor Maki’s attendance at Region U P Michigan meetings.

Wakefield physics teacher earns NSF Hamline fellowship
Lauri Maki of Wakefield High School has won a Hamline University faculty fellowship to attend an NSF funded physics institute in St. Paul from June 19 to July 28. Thirty six high school physics teachers from sixteen states were selected on a competitive basis, with tuition, room and board, books, and travel covered by a $35,480 NSF grant. Institute director Dr. Kent H Bracewell says the program will boost subject matter training and expose teachers to modern concepts and teaching approaches through seminars by a high school science expert.

The Wakefield Township High School class of 1967 held graduation Tuesday June 6 at 8:00 p.m. in the WHS gym, first time in the gym with a platform, floral displays, and a program including Pomp and Circumstance, the pledge, invocations, and speeches. Bruce Pikka led the class motto We don't belong to the future the future belongs to us as diplomas were presented by board president Reuben R. Maki. The event featured music by the band and a reading of the class song Born Free.

Mrs Ellen Davidson left May 30 for Germany with her son Brain and daughter in law to attend a family reunion in Zion Illinois hosted by another son Jerry Davidson. The group included daughter Mrs Ernest Schade and several sons. She flew May 31 from O'Hare to join MSgt Grant Davidson and grandchildren in Germany. Funeral Held For Mrs Etta Schutz At St Ignatius Loyola
Marie Crowley traveled from Houghton Michigan to attend the funeral of her mother Mrs Etta Schutz aged 79 who died on Memorial Day May 30. Services were conducted at St Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church on Saturday June 3. Mrs Schutz was well known in the area through visits with her daughter on several occasions.
