Doctor shortage looms for Michigan and nation
An acute doctor shortage threatens Michigan and the nation over the coming decade. Michigan now averages 105 doctors per 100,000, far below New York’s 191 and the national 124, with 300 new doctors yearly needed. Proposals call for expanded Michigan medical schools at U of M, Wayne State, and a new MSU school to graduate primarily family physicians, amid rising demand from Medicare, private insurance, and growing populations.
