City Faces Big Deficit Spending Care Advised

Wakefield faces a potential year end deficit if expenditures are not cut. City accountant William Jacobson warned the city commission as of December 1 twenty four hours into the budget year. He noted a cash balance of 28 881 87 and a balance remaining of 119 880 50 before required deductions including a July 1 deficit 7 184 45 and taxes owed 9 206 23. The report also covered water lines at Plymouth and a possible Chicago mine water supply risk and the need for a heating overhaul. Sgt N H Modders urged drivers to observe Christmas safety amid rising winter accident rates and noted most fatal crashes occur at night on poor road conditions with pedestrians at high risk.

Wakefield Schools Close for Holidays and Librarian Change

Wakefield schools close Friday afternoon for Christmas holidays and resume Monday January 2. Miss Helmi Haukkala named new school librarian with the opening of the second semester February 4. She succeeds Mrs. Mabel Collins who retires after more than 20 years with the schools. Haukkala, a local graduate, will finish library training at Marquette Teacher's College in January. Mrs. Mayme Strough will not return as art and English instructor after Christmas. her resignation was accepted by the board.

First Lutheran Church School Program Sunday Evening

The First Lutheran church school presents a 6:30 program with an opening hymn and invocation by Rev. 8. V. Autere. It features solos by Mrs. Elmer Lusa, piano by Karen Seppa, multiple age group recitations and songs, a boys chorus, a confirmation class, and a closing hymn under teacher supervision with Mrs. Bertha Hero in charge.

Legionnaires Have Family Party at New Quarters

American Legion Auxiliary members their husbands and guests held a Christmas party at the Memorial building Saturday night. A pot luck supper was served with Mrs. Ann Wojciechowski as chairman. Mrs. Jennie Patyk spoke on the unit’s work and donations. Miss Alfie Windberg gave Christmas readings and led singing. Dancing followed with music by John Negro. Cards awarded honors in 500 to Mrs. Jerry Pellerin and Mrs. Bertha Campbell and in bridge to Mrs. J. C. Bedell and Mrs. Elsie Rowell.

Mrs Orlich Honored at Pink and Blue Shower

Mrs Lou Orlich was the honor guest at a pink and blue shower on Wednesday December 8 at the home of Mrs Eugene Bendotti. Twenty guests attended with a large cake and luncheon, gifts for the honoree, and prize drawings won by several attendees including Mrs Joseph Radowski and Mrs Kalerva Luma.
