City commissioners approved canceling outstanding compensation policies and creating an insurance fund in the accounting department. The fund will cover administration and employee injury payments, with projected city savings of about $17,000 if adopted earlier. Since 1920, 141 city worker accidents occurred, 33 this year, and 1932 1 was the highest premium year at $3,183.53.
Michigan payrolls rise as 1932 salary cuts revert to boom levels. Governors and officials boosted pay, while some reform officials had previously trimmed checks. The legislature’s 1983 session repealed many caps, restoring higher salaries across state offices and commissions amid fiscal strain.
James R. Johns a Wakefield resident for over 30 years died early Friday at the county infirmary after six years as an inmate. Bedridden most of that time he left a widow who died 21 years ago. He is survived by Mrs. Eilsha Bullen of this city and Geo R. Johns of Ironwood. He worked at the Sunday Lake and Brotherton mines and was born about 80 in Pennsylvania. Funeral plans were not announced.
Hearings before Robert R. Wright municipal judge of Ironwood reviewed warrants issued in April charging Merle A. Hagerman former cashier and J Stanley Rummage former officer of the insolvent Peoples State Bank of Bessemer. The case involves 11319 68 dollars tied to bank loans.
City commission approves 250 dollars to cover expenses for ten active members of the local fire department attending the 39th annual convention and fire college in L Anse August 24 to 26. J W Just R E Vernor and Smoky Rogers will conduct the school on fire fighting. Local president Andy Hood says officers push fire prevention and salvage for taxpayers, noting past records show decreased fire losses. The Y P C A of the Finnish Ev Lutheran presents an August 13 program at 7 30 p m likely the last event of the season. All current and former members are invited and public attendance is welcome. Wakefield Iron Mines employs about 60 men, half of normal, as crews prepare underground workings 450 feet underground with concrete slabs. Surface crews lay sewers and water lines and repair employee housing. No ore shipments expected this year, says superintendent R B Wortley, though other company mines are shipping stockpiles to keep idle miners busy through winter.
Public sale in Bessemer transferred the late William E. Woodward estate mortgage to Grand View Hospital trustees for 850 dollars. Located at Sunday Lake and Nunnemacher streets opposite Hanson Brothers Garage, the property was bought to satisfy the Woodward estate claim and will not be held long, as several offers for its purchase have already been proposed.
Wilfred Savage age 13 of Ramsay was struck by a truck driven by Albert Oman around 8:30 pm on the old county road east of Eureka mine shops. He is in Wakefield General Hospital with a basal skull fracture. Oman, 22, was detained after returning to the scene claiming threats from a crowd and awaiting the boy’s hospital visit to determine charges.

The Oliver Iron Mining Co. began shipping ore from stockpiles at its Ironwood properties on Thursday. Two shovels operated at the Pabst and East Norrie mines with another shovel to be active today. The company plans to ship much of the ore now in stock at the Pabst and Puritan mines this year.

Dillman will handle Grand Rapids related tasks while Burridge concentrates on state and northern lower peninsula projects.
City commission approves early construction of a lakeside sidewalk from Sunday Lake Street to Park Avenue. Project to use direct loan offers for materials and labor costs matching government terms. Work will use county project style labor and hire unemployed men from city relief lists.
