James Mezzano ends bid for the Wakefield city commission after three years on the board citing time demands from a large candidate field and his brewing business. With his withdrawal, current terms expiring in September will not seek re election along with Axel Hill. Ballot lists candidates Ginger Gilbert Giansant Vetalainen Patyk Strough Bellmore Kuivinen Carr Bolen and others for two commissioner seats and constable race includes Bullen Maki Mars Selsemeyer Jr. Voters will also decide amendments including bi monthly meetings and higher borrowing limit. governor approval noted. registration closes August 12.
Auditor general report outlines about 12.75 million dollars to be distributed to state schools on September 1 from the primary school and interest fund with a December 15 second installment. The first rate is about 9.50 per census child, and December’s rate is near 1.00. Utilities pay 1932 taxes in two installments, contributing 6 million with the rest due in December. Educators seek 15 million additional state aid, based on last year’s primary funds, but the per census rate is roughly 18 percent lower than last year. Elementary aid aims to partly offset revenue losses from the 15 mill limitation amendment.
More than $133 999 in city taxes remained unpaid as a one percent penalty period began Monday night. The 30 day tax period saw mining firms pay $128 710.24, with Sundays Lake Mining Co paying $48 782.73 Wakefield Iron Co $25 783.47 and Plymouth Mining Co $54 744.04. Unpaid taxes accrue another percent each month through next March and after March 1 will be turned over to the county treasurer as delinquent.

Eddie Novak was named manager of the St Mary's team in Wakefield at a Wednesday night meeting. He issued an appeal for local players to join practice to build a strong squad for a game against Montreal. The team has endured a losing streak this season and the new manager aims to reverse it.
Michigan’s financial responsibility law seeks to curb careless drivers by requiring proof of ability to pay after a judgment of $300 or more goes unpaid. The secretary of state must suspend licenses and plates until the judgment is settled and future responsibility is shown up to $10,000 for two deaths and $1,000 for property damage, via deposit, insurance, surety bond, or personal bond with two Michigan property owners as sureties.
John H Hammer of Wakefield and Dan Sanford of Marlette led Michigan runners at the C M T C track meet in Fort Brady. Hammer won three events and Sanford took two firsts and a second while representing Michigan State in the 10 000 meters. No records fell.

Two Ramsay youths faced disorderly conduct charges after a disturbance at Dy Park during last Thursday’s dance and concert. One paid 5 dollars plus 8.10 in costs. the other received a 20 day jail sentence. Police chief Rudolph F Cloon promised continued orderly dances and no tolerance for troublemakers.
Report discusses extending Civilian Conservation Camps beyond six months with no definite information for officers. The first half-year ends November 1, while President Roosevelt can extend up to two years by proclamation. If extended, forest corps enrollees may re-enlist for a second term.
Word from here says Levi Rice has a medical operation at Rochester and is expected home within a few days. Separately, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Delmet and their family arrived in Whittier California after a five day continental trip and will visit relatives in Southern California before returning to Wake.
Merchants designated as tax collectors must file sales tax returns by August 15 and then monthly on the 15th. Forms include a $1 retail license. Remittances should be paid by bank draft, check, or money order, not currency or scrip. Penalties include 25 percent of tax for late returns and up to $1,000 fine or one year in jail for violations. Movements to repeal the three percent state sales tax are growing in Grand Rapids and Detroit. Michigan Farm Bureau seeks an exemption for farm purchases of supplies used in production.
In Macomb county a suit by Union Joint Stock Land Bank of Detroit seeks to strike down mortgage relief measures that delay foreclosures to March 1 1935. Vaughan of the states building and loan division says action can be avoided if borrowers meet court rental payments and lenders hold off foreclosures.
Wakefield high school students may receive a month of profitable practice on any instrument offered by Geor G Pixley the music supervisor. He will visit the high school from 9 00 to 11 00 to check out school owned instruments for the upcoming year and will provide assistance before school opens. Students should confer with Mr Benner or Mr Pixley soon.
More than 170 purchasers of the half year permits to operate cars with last year plates have not completed payment of the state tax by Thursday night. Many owners still operate vehicles though the July 31 due date passed. A state department representative will visit next week to boost sales.
The annual financial statement of the Marenisco township schools is published in this issue. The statement covers disbursement of school funds for all district purposes for the year ending June 30, 1933. The district faces relief-driven curtailment due to many large taxpayers failing to meet tax obligations.
Twenty two local professional businessmen and industries have signed the NRA code in Wakefield amid a meeting that drew nearly every business firm in the city. A committee will study the code further and report at a future gathering. July pig iron output reached 1,819,438 tons, the strongest rate since May 1931, with 16 furnaces added and 57 percent steel capacity utilization reported last week. Demand from autos remains steady, while fuel shortages loom from labor threats in southwestern Pennsylvania, possibly tempering steel progress.
Gogebie county receives an allotment of 562 bushels for wheat production in the coming year. Over five years, average acreage was 64 acres with mixed output. Among the peninsula counties, Gogebie ranks lower than Houghton Ontonagon Menominee Macinac and Delta for larger allotments.
Thomas Brennan brother of Mrs John Stro and Mrs William Strough of Wakefield was buried at Hurley Monday morning after a long illness. Born in Hurley he resided there most of his life. His mother Mrs Neil Brennan of Wakefield also survives.
