Hotels hire Irish youths for summer work in Catskills

The Catskills Resort Association has placed two Irish exchange students Patrick Brennan and James Erwin in local hotels and aims to fill at least 200 more positions. Brennan, a Dublin economics student, will work at Pines Hotel and Erwin, from Queens University Belfast, at Paramount Hotel. Salaries around $80 weekly plus room and board. The program seeks to absorb up to 2,000 Irish arrivals this summer, with hotels including Grossinger’s, Brown’s, and the Vegetarian Hotel showing interest. Local leaders praise the project for offering better pay but some fear displacement of American workers.
