Sheep heart transplant ends in death at Houston hospital

A 48-year-old man died on the operating table after surgeons at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston transplanted two ram hearts into him in hopes of bridging to a human donor. The patient, unidentifed but believed to be Sam Willoughby of Waterloo, had suffered cardiac arrest and was too weak to survive. The procedure followed four prior human heart transplants by Dr. Denton Cooley, with earlier recipients including Everett Thomas and Louis Fierro. Despite initial hope, the animal heart failed to beat, and no human donor heart was available.
