The fate of the bituminous matting project in improvement districts four five and six rests with property owners as registered letters detail total costs. Mayor Roche notes counsel advised no majority hold up while petitions circulate seeking further improvements, and three or four petitions are reported in the district.
A Telegraph lost ad helped Mrs. L. C. Barstow recover a missing wrist watch. Kenneth Schwartz of Potter saw the notice in the Telegraph and returned the watch yesterday. The piece praises small want ads for quick results and urges readers to place an ad for 25 cents.
Funeral services for J W Johnson 58 prominent Sidney business and civic figure were held at Gehrig funeral home Saturday afternoon. Dr P P Cheff of the Presbyterian church led brief rites, with the Masonic lodge in charge of interment at Greenwood and Rev J J Sheaff of the Methodist church delivering the sermon. A Randolph Iowa native, Johnson was well known across western Nebraska for civic involvement and state connections through service clubs and business leadership. he helped build ties with Omaha’s Ak-Sar-Ben and served as secretary of the Sidney Rotary club and chamber of commerce.
The Pullman company sleeping cars valuation increased from 540,305 to 657,405 this year as the state board of assessment and taxation cites air conditioned Standard cars as the main growth factor. County valuations include Cass 20,690 and Cheyenne 20,250 among others, with a wide spread across districts.
Bayard opens a new river bridge expected to handle thousands of cars June 15 to 18 for Nebraskas Gift of God pageant. Speakers include Rev Harold Nye, Clayton Perry, Sen A L Miller, and Gov Roy Cochran. The bridge project stems from Cochran attendance at last years Passion Play and recalls local anecdotes about town traffic and dinner plans.
Sidney's American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held Memorial Day ceremonies at the city auditorium and cemetery shrine to the unknown soldier. Hundreds of residents decorated graves in city and Catholic cemeteries with sprays and wreaths, massed with flowers by Monday noon.
The J. M. Huber company drills at about 3000 feet on the Antelope structure northwest of Harrison and aims to reach Sundance sand at 3400 feet, about 500 feet above Lance Creek's sand. Gas shows reported. many seek completion. Nearby Dakota structure well west of Chadron at 2400 feet advances quickly, amid rising oil prospecting interest in western Nebraska.
The United States navy recruiting office at Denver announces that 52 enlistments will be accepted in this region in June. The region includes all of Colorado, most of Wyoming, New Mexico and six counties in Nebraska. Many WWI veterans are taking advantage of the 20 year retirement custom, creating vacancies. Waiting lists are small and most men are sent to training stations within two months after applying. Recruiting substations are at Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Sterling, Cheyenne and Scottsbluff.
In the east, Sidney dentists announce they will close every Thursday afternoon effective this week. Dr M E Pettibone George H Thompson Dr R S Baker and Dr L C Barstow say cards will be posted in their offices to display the plan.
The pasture in this section is the most serious in years with virtually no moisture this spring. Cattle crowd the barnyard as grazing fails across thousands of acres. Only scattered areas show sufficient grass while farmers fear lack of rain through summer. Cooler weather and weekend showers offer little relief without substantial rainfall. Amateur golfers from three states will play at Sidney country club next Sunday, June 6. Registration aims for 100 players if weather cooperates. The outside nine is freshly surfaced and greens re oiled. Play starts 7 a m with noon cutoff for 18 qualifying holes. championship holes to follow. Dinner at noon.
Catherine Toof of district 54 Dalton and Harriet Taylor of district 1 Sidney were named rural and town honor students in the 1937 eighth grade graduating class at exercises last Friday. 225 pupils received diplomas from County Superintendent Gertrude M. Nelson. Imogene Osborn of Dalton earned county spelling champion honors. Dr W T Kahse delivered the commencement address.
Cheyenne county treasurer's office failed to open for business yesterday as no surety bond had been secured. Bond writers warned it may take several days to obtain the needed 125000 bond due to a two and a half day holiday. Agents expected the office to remain closed for several days while efforts to secure signatures and property statements continue.
Mrs George Beckman of Long Beach California, about 40, was instantly killed Tuesday noon when her automobile overturned six miles west of Sidney after skidding on a wet oil pave ment. A second woman and a 14 month old child escaped injury and were taken to Taylor hospital. Mrs Beckman died at the roadside and was taken to Rice funeral home.
The Lodge Pole creek rose to flood level at Potter due to drainage from a distant heavy rain northwest of town. The creek, usually underground, swelled enough to threaten the highway No 30 bridge and wash debris across the road. East of Potter, water nearly covered the highway at Point of Rocks while the north divide from Dix to Herdon received a cloudburst. A. J. Oeltjen, road supervisor, oversaw bridge checks and patrol placements overnight. Repairs may be needed on several bridges after waters subside.
Texaco Super Service station at Tenth Avenue and Hickory Street reopened yesterday morning under lessee A. O. Leth after a long term lease was finalized. Leth announced the new lease and his opening advertisement appears in this issue of Telegraph News.
Leonard Fine of Sidney was elected district master councillor of De Molays at the 19th semi annual conclave at Bridgeport last Thursday. William Johnson of Alliance was named senior councillor and Bill Mstrom of Scottsbluff junior councillor.
Conservationists at the College of Agriculture warn that summer fallowing can cause major soil losses. A test shows 105 tons per acre annually at 32 inches of rain, while contour listed corn fields lose only one tenth as much. Using contour listing with basin attachments reduces erosion and fits the 1937 agricultural conservation program. Slopes of 3 percent or more demand contour operations to prevent losses.
Reverend Henry E. Pralle, longtime pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of the South Division, preached his final sermon and will relocate with his family to Auburn after accepting a call. A farewell party followed Sundays services as congregants praised his nine year ministry.
Paul Martin and Ken Lasseter won the second blind bogey golf tournament at the country club this season and tied with a 44. A good turnout was reported and interest in golfing on the upswing this year. The ladies planned a bogey event but canceled at the last minute.
Weather across Nebraska and the Rocky Mountain region remained unsettled during Memorial Day weekend with cooler temperatures and scattered light rains. The heaviest rainfall occurred in mountain sections, while Sidney recorded a light shower Tuesday morning with about 0.06 inches by 9 am. The forecast anticipated more rain despite an official report calling for fairer and warmer conditions in most areas.
The Sidney chamber of commerce sponsors a five cent matinee at the Fox Theatre starting next Saturday, June 6. Youths under 12 are admitted for five cents, four cents paid by the chamber and one cent by the theatre, to provide a supervised shopping option for parents all summer. The opening program features Spanky McFarland in General Spanky and chapter two of the Dick Tracy serial with additional short subjects.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist church for Mrs. Luella Straight 71 resident 20 years in this community. Rev J J Sheaff officiated. Interment at Greenwood. Native of Iowa she came to Sidney in 1917. Thirteen children survived attending the funeral including Wilfred Comstock Tully Wayne Clifford Walter Arthur Harry two Mrs A P Granquist Mrs John Lindsey Mrs J C Preble Mrs Glen Roe Mrs Ada Dresser Nora and Mrs Erwin Perso.
A University of Nebraska survey by the conservation and survey division led by Dr. George E. Condra reports groundwater reserves across the state were resilient despite droughts in 1934 and 1936. After testing 500 wells with US Geological Survey cooperation, results show groundwater less affected than soil moisture and surface water, supporting Nebraska agriculture's future prospects.
