Three Defendants In Conspiracy Case Released Last Week
Three defendants in a conspiracy case were freed Friday afternoon at a preliminary hearing by Poste Judge Robert A. Barlow. Jules H. Johnson Willard A. Leabman of Lincoln and Jack Karvanek of Sidney were involved in a conspiracy action filed May 12. Karvanek was dismissed and Johnson and Leabman were re charged, but the judge ruled conspiracy requires two or more actors. Johnson’s role was only as a witness to a paper Karvanek testified he may not have signed, removing him from conspirator status. Leabman faced a lone-defendant scenario as Johnson and Karvanek were out. The hearing ran 10 a.m. to after 2 p.m. with lunch. Defense lawyer R P Kepler argued against the state’s framing, accusing eastern Nebraska men of targeting Cheyenne County.

Bridgeport Banker Dies After Auto Accident
Charles Burk, 81, a pioneer western Nebraska banker and Bridgeport State Bank founder, died from injuries after a car struck him as he crossed a Bridgeport street. Sheriff A. M. Webb said Burk walked into the side of the moving car and was hurled to a cement crosswalk, suffering a fractured skull. The driver, Earl Colwell of Hay Springs, was not held. Burk previously founded the Bank of Bayard in 1898 and later organized Deuel County Bank and the bank at McGrew.
