In Sidney a blustery Saturday kept farmers away and parking full yet stores reported satisfactory Christmas sales. While not exceeding last week’s volume, several shops saw higher totals and merchants suggest a strong finish if weather permits. Downtown parking was tight with cars circling the courthouse square and empty lots filled.
Postmaster W L Larson shares simple mailing guidance for Christmas letters and packages. One cent outside cards travel nationally, 2 cents to Mexico or Canada, 3 cents to other foreign points. temporary one and one half cent rate for unsealed cards with no personal writing. 3 cent stamp for forwarding or return if needed. Local first class sealed letters are 2 cents per ounce, domestic 3 cents, foreign 5 cents.
Mrs. George Fink of Sidney suffered a brain concussion after walking into a Denver street car on Saturday. Taken to her hotel room then planned transfer to a hospital Monday, she was in Denver with her daughter on a shopping trip.
Governor Cochran will join the reorganized state sheriff force for a January 1 campaign to reduce highway deaths. He will personally push stricter traffic law enforcement while deputies focus on traffic regulations statewide.
Sidney PTA sponsors a night school on December 18 at 7 30 p m to let parents and patrons observe regular classes in all buildings. No special program planned. attendance invited for out of town teachers and patrons.
Mrs. Clara McDaniel of Sidney petitions for a new trial after a jury verdict for Mrs. Mercy Farlow of Mitchell in the $7,500 damage suit. District Judge George Irwin in Gering heard arguments and gave Farlow’s attorneys 20 days to file briefs. The suit concerns injuries from an August 12, 1934 car crash between Rushville and Hay Springs.
County Treasurer Louis Wasem slipped on an icy sidewalk near the court house Sunday morning and suffered a painful head cut and other bruises. He was unable to work yesterday and may miss two or three days, though the injuries are not considered serious.
The Sidney county agent office in the post office basement hosted more than 19000 visitors from December 1 1934 to December 1 1935 averaging over 60 customers daily, a record for the small office.
Western Nebraska dealers say Nebraska lawmakers burden motor vehicle owners with taxes and note a new rule requiring personal tax payments before license plates shifts tax collection to dealers. They warn under the law personal taxes follow the property to final owners and dealers risk tax warrants when trades or purchases involve taxed owners. The discussion continues.
Hybrid corn and Cheyenne wheat receive government praise for performance. The federal Bureau of Plant Industry notes Iowa Illinois Indiana and Ohio tests showing superior yield retention under frost. Nebraska station credits Cheyenne wheat origin and notes its high yield winter hardiness shatter resistance and stiff straw.

William Flake, newly named state sheriff, announces enlargement of the Nebraska state sheriff department to 12 deputies to enforce motor vehicle laws and crimes. The nine districts will include Grand Island Omaha Lincoln North Platte Norfolk South Sioux City Falls City Scottsbluff and McCook with posts to be staffed later. Clark of Gering named chief deputy in charge of criminal investigation.
Western Nebraska resumes oil exploration near Harrison in Sioux county with United Products planning immediate drilling at the Antelope structure about 15 miles south of town. Officers named include James I. Durst president William T. Hewitt vice president John T. Coffee Jr secretary treasurer and Olga K. Evans assistant secretary. Previous drilling nine years ago in the same area did not reach completion.
Young girls who resemble Shirley Temple may win a Shirley Temple doll and dress at the Fox theatre on Thursday night. Entries are open to parents with little girls who resemble the film star. The Fox theater provides the dolls and Greenlees dresses donate the outfits. No entry fee. A Shirley Temple likeness is the only entry requirement.
Elmer Ewert a Gurley farm youth was reported dying from a skull wound after an accidental shooting by his brother on Monday afternoon. Dr Roche planned skull surgery but held little hope for his life as bullet embeds near fatal position.
The Telegraph invites all youngsters 14 and under in the Sidney trade area to a Christmas party matinee at the Fox Theatre on Saturday morning December 21. Two shows are planned with free admission for city children at 9 a.m. and a separate 10:30 a.m. show for rural and out of town guests.
Sidney high opens the 1935-36 season against Lodge Pole on the Lodge Pole court next Thursday night. McCann and Wendt are benched for low grades, hurting the Maroons. Expected lineup: Hengl Dedrick Scheurman Craig and Bales. Lodge Pole has two early wins and seeks revenge after last year defeats.
John D. Richards, 47, a Potter area farmer, died in an ambulance en route to Sidney hospital after falling ill at his brother in law Chris Nelson’s bean harvest farm. A long standing stomach ailment was blamed. He retired Friday night in good health but did not report for work Saturday. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Sidney Greenwood Cemetery.
The Telegraph faced a mailing slipup that delayed Potter papers past the 8:30 a.m. train. With 200 minutes to spare, publisher Guy V. Doran raced 18 miles to Potter, delivering to the Potter post office with 10 minutes to spare, fulfilling its promise to merchants and readers.
A petition drive to draft Kimball Republican Roland Rodman for governor will be filed with the secretary of state within days. County Treasurer Dendixen of Kimball said a $10 filing fee was paid Wednesday by B W Larson. Friends say Rodman has not decided whether to run.
Delegates at the Nebraska association of county commissioners and highway commissioners session in Omaha authorize a committee to study uniform purchasing accounting and other operations for economy. Attendees from the area include Guy Shaw Sidney Ford Weikhorst Potter Albert Fenske Sunol J W Billeter and I L Pindell. The group also may study county consolidation proposals and highway surveys using federal funds to assess traffic origin and destination and density.
Readable items for 1936 ballots include a plan to abolish the land commissioner’s office opposed by Leo Swanson of Omaha who bets the measure will fail. A second amendment would repeal the double liability for stockholders in failed banks. A third proposal would exempt the first 5000 of home and farm property from taxation.
Potter hosts the Tri County Firemen convention on January 15 with plans to expand beyond borders to a tri state scope. President Pete Hansen announces a tentative program featuring Horace M. Davis state fire marshal Chief Patrick of Laramie and Denver’s fire chief among attendees from Scottsbluff Sidney Kimball Chappell and more. A large Cheyenne delegation includes Chief Ed Taylor the police chief mayor sheriff and city officials plus editor Charles Thomson of the Wyoming State Tribune.
Agricultural agents and home demonstration agents from panhandle counties met at the Box Butte county courthouse in Alliance for an all day session. L. I. Frisbie and Miss Mary Eflen Brown from Lincoln assisted as they discussed 4-H club program changes for 1936 and planned activities for the coming year. Attending from this area were County Agent J. C. Swinbank, L. D. Willey, and Miss Margaret Cunningham.
Nebraska farmers show strong interest in a windbreak and woodlot program. Extension forester Earl G. Maxwell notes a surge in applications as the Clarks-McNary planting plan, run by the agricultural college extension service and county agents, was announced last week. Over a million seedlings were distributed last spring.
Gurley villagers protest a commission decision saying towns cannot limit highway 19 speeds through Gurley. The Gurley Gazette criticizes county officials for lack of cooperation. Attorney General Wright says the delinquent tax liquidation law is constitutional and advises treasurers to accept installments where possible.
Shareholders of the Sidney Loan and Building Association will meet this evening to vote on federalization. Officials say the ballot is mainly a formality, as most shareholders have already granted verbal consent. Leon Fine, president, notes over a year of planning aims to create a stronger, larger home owned association. Federal officials have praised local leaders for strong management during difficult years.
The McGrew high school basketball squad coached by Ray Maley of Sidney tops the tri county standings after a 22 to 7 win over Melbeta. McGrew faces Henry, 1935 champions, in the feature game this weekend.
Sidney and surrounding officials gathered for a chamber of commerce meeting to discuss the cost audit survey of city county and school governments. The Telegraph News could not publish full coverage, but Friday edition will carry thorough details of the meeting.
The Kimball mayor and council filed a complaint against Elizabeth G Beard administratrix of Fred Morgans estate for selling liquor at Morgan drug store in violation of city and state laws. The suit alleges the hospital is within 150 feet of the store and that Beard falsely claimed ownership of a $10 000 drug stock and seven months in business prior to June 25.
Funeral services were held Friday for Cheyenne county pioneers Ed C. Sanders and Mrs. Joseph Morfeld. Sanders was buried at Sanders cemetery after services at his home, with a two mile long funeral procession. Morfeld’s funeral took place at the Catholic church and burial followed in the Catholic cemetery. The Rice and Gehrig funeral services led the arrangements.
Walter Clark, a well known Oshkosh pioneer and the first sheriff of Garden County, died at his home last week. He previously served as Devel County sheriff when the county split and Garden County formed. Elected in 1906 and 1910 respectively, he was a respected lawman among western Nebraska settlers.
Emily Gould of Sidney unit announces the American Legion auxiliary will mobilize its 400000 members to press for immediate payment of adjusted service certificates when Congress convenes in January. They stress the certificates are wages earned by veterans and urge prompt settlement, citing 18 years since service and a fair interest rate.
