Obituary of Anton Janssen Saathoff

Anton Janssen Saathoff died at his home near Steele City at 5:30 pm Sunday aged 73 years 6 months 27 days. Funeral at Zion Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Raschke and Rev. Diekhoff. Born November 12 1856 in East Friesland, he came to America in 1880 and lived in Illinois Kansas Nebraska before settling on a farm near Dilfer Nebraska. Survived by widow and eleven children, sixteen grandchildren, a brother and two sisters in Germany and many relatives. He was a charter member of Zion Lutheran and esteemed in the community.

Miss Edith Tripp former Steele City high school English teacher arrived home in Waldo Kansas after a two week vacation touring Arksbad Caverns Santa Fe Pueblo Colorado Springs She will teach next term at Reynolds Nebraska and keep in touch with friends through the News In Steele City visiters included C Thompson Bank of Bisbee Arizona and NC Thompson Cananea Copper Co representatives They spoke of Cananea operations since 1900 and of four hundred Americans living there Also reported rainfall of 2 40 to 3 inches with 1 30 yesterday morning and local visits from Howard Haddix and wives and Perle Justis and wife.

Daniel B. Davis Passes After Funeral in Silver Cliff

Daniel B. Davis died Friday June 13 at Taylor’s Hospital in Fairbury at age 33 years 9 months 4 days. Funeral services were held Sunday June 15 from his residence at 2 pm and at Silver Cliff church at 2:30 pm. Rev. Kohrn led the services and interment followed in Silver Cliff cemetery. He is survived by wife Viola Dir. and siblings Steve Davis of Omaha, J. H. Davis of Hollenberg, three sisters Mrs Berney Bradley Greenleaf KS Mrs Clara Sewell Washington KS and Mrs Walter Haes Parma Idaho. Born in Hollenberg Kansas he married Viola Dir. Funke on May 3 1921. He was loved in the Hollenberg Steele City communities.

Funeral services for Belva Woods held in Fairbury

Belva Kinnamon Woods age 38 died June 17 at 4 30 p m in Fairbury. Funeral services conducted by Rev John Filinger at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. Interment in Fairbury cemetery. Survived by husband and daughter Marjorie Lou seven. Former teacher at Steele City School and daughter of Chas Kinnamon of Fairbury.

Fourth of July Celebrations Planned in Steele City

The Steele City Commercial Club held its June meeting to set July Fourth plans. Mark McDonald was elected master of ceremonies for both days, Charles Lowe to broadcast programs, Rev. J. Filinger to present the speaker, and dignitaries including governor Chas Dryang, congressman J. O. Norton, and State Treasurer Stebbins invited. A public information bureau and an entertainment act were arranged, with a special rest room in the community hall and a speakers platform. Local visits and subscriptions to the News were noted.

Local potato crop swells with heavy rains and large tuber

Heavy rains boost the region's potato prospects with Chester Wilcox reporting a bumper yield and a potato as big as a man's fist. In other news Mrs Emma Pearson and Ruth Garrett visited relatives in St Joseph last weekend.

Local Gardener Plants 200 Celery Seedlings

Ray Cassell begins a new garden venture by planting 200 celery plants early this week. He notes celery has been grown here by G.S Babeoth but not widely cultivated. Cassell reports the plants are hardy and thriving well.
