Adventures of Flanders and Wheeler in a Colonial Indian Chase
In May 1736 two Charlestown boys, Charles Flanders and William Wheeler, hunt for a gray horse and a black mare with a colt. Induced by bells, they split paths but are captured by Indians. William is wounded. A white settlers’ party pursues, rescues both boys, recovers the horses, and releases them near sunset. William recalls the escape amid hogs and danger, an event remembered as a harsh frontier tale.
