Bascom House lies at Willow Creek Ranch near Dickey Idaho as a stopping place on the Mackay to Salmon River Valleys route. The proprietor E W Bascom promises to spare no effort to make it the best travelers home in Central Idaho with reasonable terms.
Custer county famed for wild game and scenic beauty features Bennett S. Brown of Challis in Cape Horn camp after deer hunting in Loon creek country. Brown also mines placer, photographs mountain scenery, guides hunts in Sawtooth mountains, and winters in Challis making boots and shoes while running a shop that offers youth chess and reading.
The Custer Lodge No 21 of the I O O F records condolence for Alvah P Challis founder of Challis and pioneer of Custer county. It notes his fifty years of Odd Fellowship his kindness and humanity and his influence leaving a real vacancy in the village. A copy will be sent to relatives the charter draped in mourning and the resolutions published in The Silver Messenger and Idaho Odd Fellow.
Alvah P Challis died at his sister Mrs Louis Rakes home near Overbrook on Friday April 17 after a stomach cancer in his seventieth year. Born September 16 1832 in Rosedale Indiana he moved to California in 1852 and spent his life in the West pursuing gold mining and prospecting across multiple camps.
In Challis Idaho for 86 years, he lived on land named after him on the town stream. He visited relatives only once in 84 years, Christmas Eve, in fragile health. Never married, he spent his life among mining camp workers yet remained gentle. He valued Odd Fellowship and Masonry. Funeral by I O O P Topeka, burial by Overbrook Masonic lodge at Twin Mound cemetery on Sunday the 19th.
District Court convened in Challis on Thursday April with Judge James M Stevens and clerk Geo E Keyen. Bar list includes Boise City Blackfoot Pocatello Challis and others. On criminal docket two cases State of Idaho vs Dr C P Houston Manslaughter and State of Idaho vs Walker Grand Larceny.
