Alvah P Challis died at his sister Mrs Louis Rakes home near Overbrook on Friday April 17 after a stomach cancer in his seventieth year. Born September 16 1832 in Rosedale Indiana he moved to California in 1852 and spent his life in the West pursuing gold mining and prospecting across multiple camps.

In Challis Idaho for 86 years, he lived on land named after him on the town stream. He visited relatives only once in 84 years, Christmas Eve, in fragile health. Never married, he spent his life among mining camp workers yet remained gentle. He valued Odd Fellowship and Masonry. Funeral by I O O P Topeka, burial by Overbrook Masonic lodge at Twin Mound cemetery on Sunday the 19th.
