The Challis, Idaho pioneer Alvah P. Challis died April 17 1905 in Carbondale Kansas from stomach cancer. Born in Indiana 71 years earlier he moved west in 1850 seeking gold, mining across Oregon British Columbia Montana Idaho and finally Challis where a town is named in his honor. Known as an honest, charitable man, he faced debt and hard labor with resilience and left a legacy as a steadfast pioneer active in placer mining and local affairs.
