Flight Officer Jack Wilson returns to Maxton Field North Carolina after a 15 day furlough spent with relatives and friends. Navy and Army personnel visit relatives in Doylestown Sterling Akron and Detroit as servicemen prepare for new postings and duties.
From an Englith Air Force Fighter Station in England comes word that Pvt F C Novosel son of Mrs Anna Novosel of 192 N State St is part of a high trained group on alert for fires in aircraft hangars workshops and living quarters. They use fast fire trucks carbon dioxide and water streams to contain blazes quickly and rescue pilots. Novosel formerly worked as a crane operator for Ohio Box Board Co in Rittman and is a Rittman High School alumnus.
John Conrad saw a silver fox five miles south of Rittman on two mornings last week but a squirrel hunter stopped the sightings the first day. Raymond Morty shot five foxes in the summer and neighbors note the impact on his chickens.
Pfc Donald Dearolf crossed the channel on D day and has been in France ever since. Pvt Alfred V Anderson moves to 1884 S A D E M L Ft Sill Okla. The notice lists P F C Richard J Bedner at Fort Lewis and Pvt John L Lance awaiting assignment at APO 5833, Postmaster New York. It covers P F C James Kitts on furlough and transfer to Camp Breckenridge APO 451, Lt James Poe overseas with Co D 21 Tank Bn, APO 260, and Kenneth Haldiman returning to U S soil for stationing at Oakland Naval Hospital Staff. Seaman 1/c James Hawkins assigned to SS Galen S Stone via Fleet Post Office New York after five ship trips. Seaman Bernie Wilson returns to California from 12 day leave, with 15 months in South Pacific and five major battles. Lt B W Killough to RTU Key Field Meridian Miss. Pfc Don P Heiks 23 returns from overseas and enters redistribution in Miami Beach after 28 months in Southwest Pacific. formerly employed at Ohio Salt Company.
Miles Firestone of the Wayne County Board of Health Office will head the National War Fund drive this fall. The campaign runs from October 9 to October 31 with a $40,000 goal, about $10,000 more than last year. Local chairs include C E Rhonemus in Rittman and Harry Hartzler in Sterling R D for townships outside Rittman.
Harry Domboff to be vice chairman and Bernard Pfaff to be treasurer in Rittman with C E Rhonemus chairing. Firestone says the campaign top organization is nearly complete and proud to have the best setup in Wayne County. Headquarters opened at the Board of Trade, 110 E North St, phone 240. Town and township chairmen met at campaign HQ Tuesday evening, September 19 at 8 00.
Democratic leaders of Rittman met at City Hall and chose W. W. Bodager as chairman again with R. J. Krabill as finance chairman. They debated adding a precinct by moving part of precincts 3 and 5, and possibly moving the 3 voting place. The group pledged to secure soldier votes in the next ten days and will open campaign headquarters on S Main St weeks before election day November 7.
Attorney C. E. Rhonemus was invited to speak at the Wooster chapter of the Business and Professional Women at the Methodist church. He discussed daily legal matters including marital law, wills, and women’s legal advances since 1887, concluding with inheritance taxes.
M. F. Motzko of Wadsworth has bought the Haulk barber shop on the Square and will move his business to Rittman once he locates housing for his family. Motzko has 28 years in Wadsworth barbering. Haulk plans to continue war work in Akron.
A member of the Armed Forces, S/Sgt Robert Beachy, sends heartfelt thanks to friends here as he remembers his recent birthday from his troop carrier station in England. His message honors support from home and reflects wartime gratitude.
Mrs. M. R. Beachy and Mrs. Lydia Rock attended the funeral of Mrs. Mary Derr in Wooster on Tuesday. Mrs. C. E. Shields visiting relatives in London returns home as her daughter and son-in-law stay in College Street. Mr. and Mrs. Ray D. Watkins of Grandview plan a move Friday to New York City. Mrs. Charles Boling remains an operative patient at Wadsworth hospital. Mrs. Clyde Spain is homebound with a broken hip from a Saturday morning fall. Mary Hoff is also an operative patient at Wadsworth hospital.
P F C William Grant Justice, drafted from Portsmouth in 1942, served with the 13th Infantry. After training at Fort McClellan, he went overseas in 1943, landed in Ireland, and fought in France where he was killed in action. The War Department confirmed his death on September 20 after earlier reports of missing in action. His wife and two year old son were notified last Wednesday. they reside with Mr and Mrs Paul Canter on Sterling Avenue.
Karl E Hoover of Wooster as executor for Elva Derthick of Rittman filed an inventory with the probate court listing $50 in chattels $260.79 in securities $285.25 in accounts and real estate valued at $4500 The appraisement was prepared by J H Fisher R V Fredrick and C E Rhonemus.
Ida B Harter of Rittman is named administratrix of Frank Harter estate by the probate court with a $1000 bond. Estimated personal property about $500 and realty about $7500 will be appraised by W W Badager J S Branigan and R V Fredrick. Heirs include widow Ida B Harter daughter Evelyn P Smith of Rittman and son Raymond E Harter of Canton.
Charles Hanzie of Rittman R D was fined 200 dollars plus costs in Judge D K Gensemer's court at Creston after his car struck a Willard Eby vehicle from Sterling at 10:00 PM Saturday. He faced drunken driving charges and the collision caused significant damage to both cars.
The last will and testament of William Swartz of Rittman was filed March 9 1940. It provides debts and funeral expenses be paid by the executor. Margaret E Swartz of Rittman is named executrix. Household goods go to his wife with life use of Rittman property and a Milton Township farm. The residue is placed in trust for the widow during her life and then divided among children, with specific shares. Upon widow’s death Margaret receives Rittman property and William receives the Milton Township farm. Next of kin include the widow Hattie L Swartz of Rittman three sons George Howard W Swartz William F Swartz and one daughter Margaret Swartz. Also listed are 18 men placed in Class 1-A of the draft last week, including Charles F Garrison and James R Gresser.
Ohio Governor Bricker announces Thanksgiving will be observed on Thursday November 23, aligning with federal law setting the fourth Thursday in November as the holiday. Some calendars previously showed the 30th, but the official proclamation fixes the date.
Mr Griner spoke to the Sterling Echo Senior Class about ordering graduation announcements and name cards. After reviewing several styles, the group chose a design and placed the order.
The Sterling School reopens its cafeteria at ten cents per plate thanks to community donations and a canning project. Local volunteers canned 1556 quarts of fruits and vegetables, with peaches and plums purchased by the School Board.

Friday morning opened the year’s first assembly, a combined program for high school and grades led by Rev. Hartman with devotional, music by Mr. Garver, and an inspirational talk by Rev. David Rees.
The student body and staff extend sympathy to Superintendent Sinclair after his grandmother Mrs Mary Ann Derr of Smithville passed away. He was absent from classes Tuesday afternoon to attend the funeral.
Mr Sinclair announced plans to organize a Junior Red Cross unit. Interest appears among many girls, with Mrs Bixler asked to lead. projects are being developed for possible formation in individual rooms depending on turnout.
A 6% pound daughter was born Monday Sept 25 at Wadsworth hospital to Mr and Mrs Robert Cox. Mrs Cox was Kathleen Williams. The father is in the Army overseas. A daughter was also born to Mr and Mrs Frenk Wolfe of Rittman R D Sunday at Wadsworth hospital.

Divorce case presented in Wooster common pleas court Saturday involved Mary Margaret Bishop of Rittman versus Gus M. Bishop of Rittman. Attorney C. E. Rhonemus represented Mrs. Bishop.
The state of Ohio files a common pleas court suit against W. E. Bauman of Sterling for 194.56 alleging nonpayment of unemployment compensation contributions. The claim states payments were due since August 7, 1937 following a prior finding against Bauman.
A testimonial dinner was held last Saturday by two Ohio Bik board departments for departing superintendent Al Manogue and Ray Watkins. About 150 people attended the event.

Robert Wenger son of Mr and Mrs Wenger of N Second St is reported missing in action in France since Sept 6 the war department informed a telegram received Friday. He joined in 1942 at Fort Benning paratroop training fractured an ankle then served as infantry with General Patton's Third Army his letters describe fighting in Normandy Argentan and a rapid return travel across France. He graduated from Rittman High School in 1940.
Orrville’s light lineup defeats Medina 20 7 as Rittman fumbles and punts mistakes punctuate the clash. Wenger blocks a punt for Rittman’s TD while Monteith returns a Rittman punt for Orrville’s score. Hobell adds the extra point.
Norton leads Springfield 32 to 13 as Medias posts 7 and Stow adds 32 in late grid action. Local teams contest region football style in a compact summary of scores and standings.

Former Ohio Boxboard Co. employees Glenn Strader and Gerald H. Sigler were killed in World War II actions. Sigler to France on D day served as infantry ranger and was reported killed Sept 2. Strader, 28, of Wooster, died during tank destroyer battalion maneuvers in England. wife and three daughters survive.
