Report from Holden Arboretum near Cleveland notes the first flight of 20 Canadian geese on August 22. Oldtimers warn this early migration may signal a severe winter for Ohio. The clipping also carries miscellaneous quotes and quips on taxation, shoes, insomnia, and public opinion.
At Monday's council meeting Kimsey of N Fifth St argued that only residents who signed up paid for city spraying this year. He cited 12 signed and nine backed out, then sprayed his lot creating a fog seen on neighbors properties. Neighbors called it offensive though reportedly harmless.
Rittman and Wayne County sheriffs arrested Billy Joe Scalf wanted for breaking out of a Johnson City Tennessee jail and facing three breaking and entering charges. Bond set at 10000. extradition waived for return to Johnson City. Also reported fines for local intoxication, disorderly conduct, and traffic offenses.

The Rittman American Legion begins its annual membership drive with a new member set to win $50 at the members' dinner on November 11. The prize incentives dues payments from veterans of World Wars I II and the Korean conflict. Interested men may contact Warner at Rittman Shoe Repair or any Legion member.
A 12-man American press group visits Moscow and Kiev assessing life under communism. They note fear driven by Party control, limited travel for outsiders, and a dull tourist experience amid a widespread belief the regime is a colossal fraud. They contrast public smiles with fear and doubt about mass uprising.
The Rittman Indians meet Millersburg Friday at 8:30 p.m. due to Millersburg being on slow time. Earlier preview defense looked strong in Dalton and after this game the team travels to Norwayne and Doylestown on the next two Fridays.
Harry Fry will preside at the Rittman Band Mothers Club meeting Monday September 17 at 7 pm in the high school library. All mothers of children in band activities are urged to attend. an election of officers will be held.
The Recreation Hall schedules begin Monday with a girls tumbling class at 7 p.m. The program continues with boys tumbling and wrestling sessions on certain evenings. Registration for ballroom dancing opens September 19 with lessons at 50 cents each or ten for five dollars, taught by Harley Kerr. An adult class may start when enough sign up.
Rus sell W. Frey will show colored views from Europe this summer in his slide talks before five Rittman clubs. The Rotary Club Lions Club Milton Presbyterian Church Brotherhood Eastern Star and Three Arts Club will host the talks. Frey collected over 800 slides, with some depicting current conditions in Russia.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Gillman Funeral Home for Mrs Anna A Metz 78 of Marshallville who died Monday at her daughter’s home in Rittman She was born in Bayard Ohio moved to Dalton in 1895 married Abraham Bowers in 1895 then John Metz in 1909 She is survived by two daughters Mrs Liechty Miss Velma Bowers two sons Dewey Bowers Otto Metz two sisters and many grandchildren Reverend Virgil Snyder and Reverend P R Wright officiated Burial was in Dalton Cemetery.
Rittman Council discussed finances and voted to place a one point five mill operating levy on the fall ballot to replace the current one mill levy expiring this year. A four tenths mill recreation levy renewal was also proposed for the ballot.
City Engineer Larry Smith proposed in a council meeting that the city could offer twice a month trash pickup at no extra cost if residents cooperate. He suggested compact containers of wood or metal, about a bushel in size, with lids for easy handling by one worker.
The Junior Class of Rittman High School schedules a paper and scrap drive on Saturday, Sept 22. Class groups will cover all town sections to collect paper cardboard and metals including iron brass copper and lead.
The Hermina Lendy Missionary group hosts a rummage sale at Fisher's Plumbing Friday evening September 21 from 7 to 9 and Saturday morning September 22 from 8 to 1. The event offers varied items for community shoppers.
