The Department of Commerce and the U S Government report a surplus of bachelors in Wayne County with 6640 single men over 14 and 5092 unmarried women, suggesting favorable odds for prospective brides amid local social events and club notices.
Mrs. Mary Lance age 83 of 83 West Hill Street died this afternoon at Wayne County Home. She was mother of Gail Lance, a Rittman High School instructor. Funeral arrangements are with Gillman Haines Funeral Home. service time unavailable at press time.
Rittman City Council deferred parking decisions on South Main Street to Southend merchants and the Chamber of Commerce after examining Freed’s lease proposal and a no parking strip. The city would prepare the lot at a near 1000 dollar cost while merchants guarantee rent collection, sparking debate over city obligation to provide parking.
The Green River Ordinance sailed through the Rittman City Council 2 3 after a tense debate over targeting obnoxious peddlers and door to door sales. Mayor Orla Houglan cast the deciding vote to place the measure on city archives as residents and salesmen argued over licensing and the impact on Avon Watkins firms and local livelihood.
School board critic Sylvan Wiles condemns the accelerated lunch schedule and crowded cafeteria lines, saying the shorter noon hour creates tension and leaves little time for a break. Principal Heter and others cite teacher breaks and transport concerns as issues, while the board moves ahead with a track project and a district facilities survey. There is also talk of adjusted bus schedules to ease after school travel.
Wadsworth Hospital Auxiliary plans to urge members to contribute 8000 from auxiliary funds toward an 18885 purchase of about 38 acres for a new hospital. The Wadsworth-Rittman area association holds an option on land west of Wadsworth, north of Rittman near old Route 224.
Junior Achievement will be reorganized and reactivated in Rit Man with an executive plan by Harold Byers. A Sept 23 meeting for JA participants is set at the JA building on North State Street from 7 to 9 PM. Henry Heffner will speak and film shows accompany the kickoff. two Junior Achievement companies are planned with about 20 members each.
The Rittman fire department rushed to two incidents this week. On Salt Street Extension and Route 126 a blaze east of Packing Corporation of America burned land after fireworks sparked nearby, controlled in under 30 minutes. A gas well explosion at Leo Goffinet farm three miles west on Route 604 at 10 30 p m was extinguished in five minutes by the department.
Machinery was set to organize volunteers for the second annual United Fund Drive in Rittman. Campaign chairman Lewis K Burnett named George Falb of Ohio Edison as utilities committee chair. Glenn Parman leads the group with William Holt as Organization Committee chair and Mrs Ethel Hauenstein as captain. The drive starts October 16 with a goal of 312,675.
Police Chief Merle Heffelman reports multiple youths will be questioned this week about vandalism across the community. Six boys have admitted involvement. three are high school students and three are junior high. The latest act involved tearing siding from the Royce Wagner home on North Third Street and two young children confessed after which their parents administered punishment.
Women from the Women's Republican Club of Rittman Area will gather Sept 18 at 132 North Second Street in a social, get acquainted event starting at 8 pm hosted by Mrs Lindsey Williams. Wayne County chair Mrs Pat Kindswatter will attend to meet members and invited guests.
Annual Frank Bow Day will be celebrated at Clay Park Canal Fulton with an OX roast honoring the veteran congressman The event is set for Saturday Sept 21 and begins serving at 4 pm Tickets are $4 and available from Mrs Lindsey Williams at 925-4656 or Paul Baker at 325-1270
Serteroner Blatter reports the Se Muton Township Zoning Committee faces a decision day on whether residents will vote on zoning. John Mitchell of the State Department of Development attends the Sept 24 session. About 15 percent of township questionnaires have been returned to guide data for the potential zoning ballot. Public hearings would take 150 days after a preliminary land use report, with 90 days' notice to the board of elections before the November 1964 ballot.
