The Rotary Club sponsored Bartok Circus drew about 1100 for the Wadsworth Rittman Hospital building fund. Highlights included a monkey act and a crowd from Mennonite Home for the Aged. Local officials and community members attended as part of a busy Rotary and PTA event backdrop.
Two fires occurred Wednesday near PCA projects, one north of the city and one south. A grass blaze at 12:30 p.m. burned at the Thurmanoe residence on Rout 108 south of Rittman, quickly extinguished by firefighters. A second blaze along Erie Railroad tracks north of Rittman near Route 57 and old Route 4 in Chippewa Township was doused by the Chippewa Fire Department.
Packaging Corporation of America announced a fully automated 1.5 million dollar carton warehouse in Rittman. The 45,000 square foot facility will use cranes and a central control panel to store and retrieve cartons in 8,500 compartments, handling about 60,000 tons of finished packaging annually. Construction starts fall, with completion expected in 1969 and full operation by late 1969 or early 1970.
Mrs Allan J. Broadhurst and Mrs Irvin Luikart will be honored as volunteer workers at a Wadsworth Rittman Hospital Auxiliary ten Monday event at 1 p.m. at Methodist Church Wadsworth. Craig H. Wilson, Action Line editor of the Akron Beacon Journal, will speak. A pledge to the hospital building fund will be announced during the affair.
Police in Rittman report several motorcyclists gathered on lower South Main Street during Labor Day weekend. They were asked to leave and there were no disturbances or arrests. The group departed quietly.
At a Monday city council meeting in Rittman residents pressed for police help to remove a neighbor’s trash barrel near an expensive red bud tree. They cited repeated debris issues and questioned police responsiveness. Council discussed ordinances, enforcement, and possible revisions while fluoridation and housing regulations were also on the agenda.
The 1968 69 United Fund drive in Rittman pledges a 9100 industry quota led by Ed Taylor and Ronald Woyat of Packaging Corporation of America. Division heads include Robert Gillman for Commercial, Mrs. Ralph Overholt for Organization, Charles Hardiman for Morton Salt, and Vernon Phillips coordinating small industries. Total goal is 17 500 with 2700 allocated to Boy Scouts of America.
United Telephone Company of Ohio plans extended service for Rittman area subscribers. Roy Moffett of Rittman Orrville suggests Wooster and Wadsworth as likely targets. He cites a cursory city council survey and notes nearby towns Marshallville and Sterling pay the same or higher rates.
The Rittman Press reports a college hospital letter from Elaine James a Rittman High School senior confined at University Hospital Columbus Ohio Room 1186 She says she is lonesome with no mail arriving Elaine is the daughter of Bryan and Mrs Dean 31 Elliott Orrville and notes transfer from Orrville Osteopathic Hospital the week of Aug 21 Her parents report she is slightly improved but her stay length is undetermined.
