Sterling Woman Dies In Crossing Crash

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Jonell Schorle 23 of Sterling who died Saturday when her car was struck by an east bound B and O passenger train at a crossing two miles southwest of Rittman. She had moved to Sterling with her husband and two children four days prior. The car was carried about 240 feet beyond the crossing. She leaves a husband Gene a daughter Darlee 3 a son Stephen 214 months and a mother and five siblings. Burial was in Waynesville North Carolina.

Donkey Baseball Draws Crowd and Scouting Funds

A Monday donkey baseball game drew about 600 fans. Harold Cormony reports the Explorer Scout post raised roughly 175 dollars. The sanitation committee wore white suits to keep grounds clean. The Bloomer girls beat the Chamber of Commerce 3 to 1 in five innings. Scouts thank patrons and players. Rittman High School hosts a Get Acquainted Dance after football previews with Chuck LaParo and local groups providing music.

Three killed as car collides with truck on Acme Hill

A head on crash on Rt 224 at Acme Hill left Robert Lee Winkler 16 dead an hour after the collision. Paul Ayres 80 of State St and Eddie Guest of RD 2 Wadsworth are in critical condition at Wadsworth Hospital. Ayers drove the car and is believed to have fallen asleep. The youths were returning from Labor Day motorcycle races in Xenia when their 1951 convertible swerved across the centerline and struck the westbound truck driven by John M. Jones of Blairstown. The car was demolished. the truck rammed onto the ditch and a trailer was destroyed. Funeral arrangements for Winkler are set for Friday at Akmen and the Apostolic Christian Church.

Salt Worker Feted On Retirement in Akron Dinner

Claude Crawford 65 of Wadsworth received a farewell dinner from Morton Salt Co. colleagues in Akron on August 31 for his 24 years of service as maintenance engineer. He was presented with a watch and a purse.

Junior Achievement Building to Rise on N State Street

Rittman to raise 7500 more dollars toward a 10000 project for a Junior Achievement building on N State Street near the N Main Street Recreation Building. Ohio Box Board Co furnishes 2500. door to door and business solicitations planned for Sept 14–21 with a goal to finish by October 15.

Six Teams to Compete in Rittman Football Preview Game

Six teams will perform 15 minute sessions Friday at 7 30 p m DST in the Rittman High School stadium. Matchups include Rittman vs Dalton Norwayne vs Doylestown and Shreve vs Smithville with Wadsworth facing Medina this year.

Rittman Schools Enroll 1159 Pupils for Year

At the first board meeting for the new year Superintendent Hauenstein outlined plans for a six room elementary building with a playroom and lunch facilities. High school plans near completion. Enrollment totals show 82 in kindergarten and 1159 overall with 232 in the high school. A desk shortage hampers the system after a truck carrying 60 new desks was destroyed.

Sunset Heights wins Rittman allotment naming contest

John Collins, 40 Orchard St, local homeowner and longtime Ohio Box Board worker, was chosen for the Sunset Heights name in a contest by a committee of judges from the Rittman Savings Bank. The prize of 100 dollars was to be delivered by cashier's check Thursday evening. The allotment lies on the westerly edge of Rittman north of West Sunset Drive.

Ohio auditor cites state property values and county wealth

State Auditor James A. Rhodes reports the appraised value of all property in Ohio for the first time shows the state’s total worth. Wayne County ranks ninth among 88 counties in wealth. A Rittman school truck crash damaged desks and chairs. local schools reused old furniture until new stock arrived. The Bodager agency gains praise for its new storefront. Ohio State University Bureau of Business Research notes July retail sales up nine percent from last year.

Police Notes Update On Local Drunk Driving Cases

Albert Ady was fined 100 dollars and costs plus three days jail for driving while intoxicated and fined 250 dollars and costs for resisting an officer. Guy Baker bound over to the grand jury with bond set at 300 dollars. Robert McCune fined 20 dollars and costs for reckless driving and 10 dollars and costs for operating without a license. Frank Webner fined 10 dollars and costs for intoxication and disturbing the peace.

Bronze dedication tablet for Junior Achievement building

A permanent bronze tablet will be placed in the proposed Junior Achievement building. The plaque will list all individuals and organizations contributing one hundred dollars or more to the building fund.

Polio Case Reported in Rittman Patient at Akron Hospital

Bobby Mougey a seven year old boy and son of Mr and Mrs Herald Mousey was admitted to Children's Hospital in Akron on Thursday as a possible polio patient He is in isolation as a precautionary measure and this marks the first polio report in Rittman this year

Tri-County Center Fund Drive Names Chairman

Announcement this week appoints Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney as regional chair for the Tri-County Mental Guidance Center drive to raise funds October 3 to 8. Wayne County quota is 16000 dollars and all county team captains must attend a September 13 meeting at 8 30 p m DST at the Wooster Methodist Church.
