Draft registration opens in Rittman council room

By noon today 113 men registered at the Rittman draft center in City Hall council room. Kenneth Hilty registered first Monday morning. daily totals totaled 19, 46, 37, and 11 through Thursday morning. The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary run the registration with volunteers listed.

1949 Driver's License Sale Starts September 7

Mrs. Ethel M. Fredrick of 14 W Ohio is named deputy registrar for the sale of 1949 driver's licenses announced by Edward T. Fogo. License sales will begin September 7. The 1948 licenses expire at midnight September 30.

Rittman Football Team Shows Promise After Early Scrimmages

Rittman candidates with ten days of practice display team cohesion and effort. A scrimmage at Copley last Saturday ended in a loss but provided valuable experience. Another scrimmage with Norton Center showed improvement despite a setback.

Seven intoxication arrests heard before Mayor Ritter

In recent sessions Mayor Melvin R. Ritter dealt with seven intoxication cases. Edward Newell, Joe Landry, James Brown, Frank Baco, Alexander Easley, John Byrd, and M D McClure faced fines of 10 dollars and costs for intoxication, with McClure facing a higher amount on a second offense. Lindsey Adkins faced an assault and battery charge with a 50 dollar fine. Frank Baco was convicted of petty larceny and driving without a license, paying 15 dollars and costs. Donald Hughes paid 5 dollars and costs for intoxication, Amos Scott 10 dollars for reckless driving.

Rittman Lions Accept Doylestown Challenge

Rev Dallas Billington spoke at the Ak ron Baptist Temple Lions Club meeting at the Legion Home and outlined Ak ron Temple work. Frank Watson Don Black and John Mallory attended with guests from Doylestown inviting a donkey ball game on Labor Day, which the Lions accepted with Walter Keating named organizer.

Citizens Phone Committee Seeks War Chest for Better Service

The Citizens Telephone Committee under Ralph J Krabill raises funds to document and press for improved service in Rittman. Written complaints and forms record cases of poor service while excavation on Main Street proceeds after a broken long distance promise to George B Quatman.

Plan Benefit Game For Scout Lodge

A benefit double header is set for Saturday September 11 at Boxboard Home Field to raise funds for a Rittman Boy Scouts lodge. The 2 pm first game features Rittman Junior Legion versus Doylestown Junior Legion, followed by a 4 pm matchup between Boxboard Hardball and the Wingfoots from Goodyear. Services Friday for Henry Patnaude

Relatives report the death of Henry Patnaude on Tuesday August 31 in Newtonville Massachusetts. He was the husband of the late Martha Hickin Patnaude who died in June 1947. Services will be held Friday at 230 p.m. at Gillman Funeral Home with Rev. D B Davidson of Ticlating. Interment in Rittman cemetery.

Wooster business leaders press two fronts for improved service. A PUC meeting with Quatman is set for September 9 in Wooster. The Board of Trade opposes telephone directory ads, favoring classified listings. V Ault urged reversal but members stand firm.

City League Softball Tourney Kicks Off Tuesday

The city league round robin will start Tuesday at 7 30 p m at the old Boxboard field with a double header featuring Pleasant View Daily vs B and W Oil Co and Robinett s vs Moose. The winners meet next night for the final. A three game little world series between first and second half champions will be Sept 13–14 at 7 30 p m. The series winner gets the city league trophy. Robunet s beat the Moose 13 12 to clinch the first half title in a rain postponed game.
