Outdoor pits storage keeps vegetables fresh for winter
Farmers may store cabbage potatoes beets carrots and turnips in outdoor pits or buried barrels in well drained soil. Cabbage with leaves on rests on soil and is covered with soil strawmanure or other material during severe weather to prevent freezing. Root crops can be stored in barrels or heaped on straw and covered with straw leaves and outer salt layer. Parsnips and horseradish resist freezing and can be left in the ground or piled and covered with eight inches of salt to avoid digging in wet ground.
Fish and Game Exhibit Opens for Sportsmen Interest
Sportsmen statewide will view an exhibit prepared for installation in the Department of Agriculture offices in Columbus. The display, under the Division of Fish and Game, highlights regional fish and wildlife interests for public viewing and education.
