Playgrounds Open Mon in Rittman Summer Program

The Rittman playground program runs June 3 through August 9 under Recreation Director Homer Pyle with Gwen Keen as supervisor and Sue Roth assisting. Three playgrounds operate 9 am to noon: Central Park Mondays and Thursdays, Division Hall Wednesdays, Grandview Park Tuesdays and Fridays. Donations fund most of the operation, and the program ends with the Mardi Gras on August 9.

Mrs Virginia Hanna Fractures Knee in Home Accident

Mrs Virginia Hanna employee at Stoolmiller's restaurant fell in her Sterling Avenue kitchen and fractured her left knee. She was treated at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital and released the next day.

Otterbein College elects Francine Thompson as YDC president

Francine Thompson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hal Thompson of North State Street, was elected president of the Young Democratic Club at Otterbein College. She also serves as historian for Theta Nu sorority and writes for the school and sorority newspapers.

A 40 foot balloon filled with gas launched from Massillon's Republic Steel field at 9 30 a m and landed near Rittman about 11 a m before continuing to South Cleveland by 2 30 p m The National Lighter Than Air Club directed the flight with members and passengers following in seven cars Police met the final landing near Cleveland Hopkins Airport to monitor the routine flight which aimed to prevent a drift over Lake Erie

Jeandrevin Named North Central School Superintendent

Jeandrevin named school superintendent of the North Central School district succeeding Roy Sinclair who resigns at term end. He signs a three year contract and holds degrees from Mt. Bible School Set to Open June 3 at North Street School

The Community Daily Vacation Bible School begins Monday June 3 at 9 am in the North Street School Building. Sponsored by Evangelical United Brethren, Church of God, Presbyterian, and Wesleyan Methodist churches, the program serves children ages 3 to junior high with four departments and six preschool classes led by Mrs Bodager.

Swimming pool season tickets on sale at three locations

Recreation officials announce season tickets available at the J. W. Frye Agency Wilson Inc or the city pool. Prices are 20 dollars for family 10 dollars couples eight dollars adult single six dollars student general admission 50 cents registration for swimming lessons is at the pool 25 cents for children and 50 cents for those over 16. Lessons run every weekday morning at 10.

Poppy Drive Raises 388 Dollars in Rittman Meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary reports poppy sales in Rittman totaling 388.11 dollars over the two day annual sale. President Mrs Richard Wenger presided at the Monday meeting with 19 members present. Girls Staters and Junior members will attend the June 10 gathering as guests. A nominating slate prepared by Mrs Wenger was presented for officer elections to be held next month. Members also formed poppy wreaths for Memorial Day grave decorations.

Council backs Wooster court plan and buys police car

Rittman votes to approve the Wooster municipal court system over a county wide option and Sheriff Dalbey notes a state bill to abolish Justice of the Peace courts. Council authorizes a new police car and sidewalk repairs with cost justifications and hiring of summer help.

Candidates Must File Election Expense by June 7

The Board of Elections in Wooster says all May primary candidates must file election expense accounts before June 7. Winners who fail to file lose eligibility to run in the new election, and defeated candidates must also file or be barred from seeking office for five years.

Workers reject four percent raise at Ohio Boxboard plant

Local 150 union members at the Rittman Ohio Boxboard plant turned down a proposed wage increase of four percent effective June 1 with a six cent minimum. About 30 percent attended a meeting at Rittman High School. union president Rudolph Samic claimed no knowledge of the vote. A company spokesman said there have been no discussions since May 23, noted the letter requesting a June 18 meeting, and cited that Ohio Boxboard wages have risen substantially in ten years with March earnings at 210 dollars per hour or 92.82 per week.

Mail box improvement program begins June 3

The annual rural mail box improvement effort runs for two weeks starting June 3, 1957. Properly erected boxes free from weather exposure speed delivery. Owners should inscribe names on the visible side and keep boxes and approaches in good, painted condition.

Safety car check yields over 700 inspected

Police Chief Charles Heffelman calls the two day drive a success as more than 700 cars were checked. Town parades and service stations continue inspections and drivers without a recent check are invited to visit garages for a safety sticker with a possible second check and fines for repeat offenders.

Lions Club Meeting Sees Ladies Night and Officer Installations

Chester Smith Suffers Left Foot Injury at Work

Chester Smith of 30 Givenbriar Avenue sustained a severe cut to his left foot last Wednesday while operating a high lift at the Riliman Wigih schools building. His bot became caught in a wheel, causing arterial injury. He was treated by Dr G J Shong and is convalescing at home from the shock and blood loss.

No prospects for village engineer post

Village officials say no candidates remain for the village engineer position after three men announced interest and then withdrew. Former engineer Larry Smith has resigned and will continue part time until a replacement is hired.
