Rittman Memorial Day Parade and Services Planned

Rittman residents will honor war dead with a parade and ceremony on Thursday May 30. The Legion parade starts 10 30 a m from West Sunset Drive goes past the cemetery and into the cemetery entrance with traffic directed by Legionnaires. Services begin at 11 a m with Rev E S Hendrickson as speaker and D T R McLean and Rev Albert Henry delivering invocations and benediction. Local veterans Scouts band Gold Star Parents and community members will participate and residents are asked to display flags.

Chippewa Lake Park Opens 79th Season Memorial Day

Chippewa Lake Park will begin its 79th season on Memorial Day May 30 with The Band All America Loves in the Chippewa Ballroom for one night. Hal McIntire leads his orchestra as fireworks light the lakefront. A Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller protégé, McIntire has recorded for RCA Victor Cosmos MGM and performed at the Hollywood Palladium the Paramount Theatre and the De Commodore Hotel. He originated the enduring hit Sentimental Journey.

Junior High Commencement Planned for May 26

Junior high students will graduate in a ceremony Tuesday at 7 45 p m in the high school auditorium. The program features Marche Romane as processional, readings and original essays by students, musical numbers, and diplomas to be presented by the Board of Education vice president. Rev Wheeling will give the benediction as graduates depart to Marche Romaine.

Rittman Declares May Cleanup for Streets and Trash

The city designates May 27 28 and 29 as Spring Clean Up days. City trucks will patrol streets and collect all trash placed near the curb in containers.

Guidance drive nets 1221 for TriCounty center

A total of 1221.94 was collected in Rittman for the Tri County guidance center drive, with a goal of 1500. In the county, not including Orrville or Wooster, 2200 was obtained. County funds from Wooster and Orrville come from a Community Chest drive. Mrs Thelma Gwaltney, county drive chairman, thanks all workers for their time and effort.

Sister of Local Woman Succumbs in Mogadore Area

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hopkins Chapel for Velma Cunningham 43 of 1582 Arlington St. Akron native, long-time Mogadore resident, employed by Enterprise ManufacturingCo. Survived by husband Roy, mother Alice Flanagan, sisters Lou Jenis and MacClash, and brother Shirley Young.

Gold Star Mothers Luncheon in Wooster

Eleven Rittman women including Mrs G Clippinger and Mrs McGregor attended a Gold Star Mothers luncheon at the American Legion home in Wooster Tuesday noon. Mrs James Snyder presided as president, speakers included Mrs Glenn Horton of Toledo and Mrs Marie Moore, with singing by Mrs Allen Neilson. Plans were announced for June installations in Marshallville and an Alumni for all Girls who attended Girls State meeting at Capitol University.

Poppies on Sale by American Legion Auxiliary

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will be on the streets this weekend May 24 and 25 wearing red poppies to honor World War I and II fallen. Proceeds from the drive fund rehabilitation and child welfare work by the Legion and Auxiliary.

School Board Accepts Bids For Equipment Packages

At a special meeting on Wednesday night the Board of Education accepted bids for high school and West Hull school equipment. Monarch Equipment Co bid 8763 for kitchen equipment at West Hull. WN Keyser Co 22200 for science and home economics gear. Cleveland Sporting Goods 14100 for folding bleachers and backstops. Remington Rand 4720 for library equipment. Brunswick 16347 for classroom furniture. Summerville Akron 1328 for an office file cabinet. Some bids were under estimates. The total so far is just under the estimate with more bids expected.

Baccalaureate Services For Rittman Graduates Sunday

The 62nd Naval Commencement exercises honor 48 graduates led by National Honor Society members Donna Bordacs Mary Grant Sandra Hohler and Linda Reynolds. Speaker Rev Dwight Davidson will discuss Fixed Points. The program includes Pomp and Circumstance invocation singing and diplomas presented by Robert West.

Cancer drive short of goal in several towns

Final reports show that 1680.76 dollars was collected for the American Cancer Society in Rittman, 98 dollars less than last year. Dovglestown raised 315.54 versus 387.56 previously, Sterlis 226.00 versus 252.60 last year, and Doslestown collected less than the prior total.

Goffinet and Stromach named to Boy's State program

Rittman High juniors Jim Goffinet and Tom Stromach were chosen as delegates to the annual Boys State session at Camp Perry near Sandusky, June 7 to 16. Alternates Jack Stromach and Paul Erb were also named by the local Rotary Club and American Legion sponsors.

Rittman PTA to award three scholarships this year

The Rittman PTA will award three scholarships, two more than last year. Virginia Snyder who received last year will have hers continued, and two additional awards are offered, one for two years and one for one year, with winners announced at graduation exercises on May 31.

Rittman Library Closes for Memorial Day Observance

Rittman Public Library will be closed all day Thursday May 30 in observance of Memorial Day and will reopen Friday. It will also be closed all day Saturday during June July and August.
