A storm hit Northeastern Ohio on Wednesday evening and the Rittman area felt the impact. A tornado was sighted and touched down briefly north of Rittman, tearing limbs from trees and scattering debris. The Rittman fire department was alerted during the tornado watch.

Roy V. Shankland 62 of 447 W Sunset Dr. died Saturday afternoon at Akron General Medical Center. Born November 8, 1912 in East Union Ohio he lived in Rittman 42 years. Former Packaging Corp. of America worker and Erie Casket Co. salesman he owned Ebert's Piano & Organ Co. Survived by wife Faye son Roger grandson Reggie brother Clayton sisters Orphan Weigle Zetta Beal. Services 1:00 p.m. Wednesday May 29 Gillman Funeral Home officiated by Rev. James E. Watt. Burial Rittman Cemetery.
A Memorial Day observance in Rittman included a 10 a.m. parade down Main Street to Sunset Avenue followed by services at Rittman Cemetery. American Legion Chaplain William McCaffrey gave a prayer as David Headley State Senator delivered a war remembrance speech.
The Sleepwalker Sale in Rittman is set for Saturday August 2 as part of the annual ex travaganza of fun and bargains. A $200 cash grand prize anchors the event with additional store prizes and children’s drawings. Lew K. Burnett of the Chamber of Commerce says bands clowns and a shuttle wagon will help shoppers move between Main Square and the Shopping Center.

A thunderstorm in Rittman Sunday triggered an unintended blast from the town warning siren after a bolt struck the Metzger Avenue water tower. Chief Lawrence Cline explains the tone may occur during severe weather and urges shelter whenever heard. The siren is normally tested monthly on the first Thursday at 7 p.m.

Forty two Rittman High School students formed a scholastic team and traveled to West Holmes High School earlier this year. Among 23,000 state participants, 22 Rittman students placed in tests with George Kelbly earning four certificates and top state and district finishes in Biology I. Other honorees included Daniels, Trautwein, Lycans, Firis, Gasser, Chorba, Duckworth, Hilsheimer, Howell, Bodager, Hamilton, McCray, Watt, Harris, Dodge, Watts, Ball, and Copas for various subjects and districts. State and Kent State University district certificates were awarded to top percent of students, with the first twenty five percent receiving certificates noting placement.
The Rittman Fire Auxiliary will sponsor a garage sale on Saturday June 7 starting at 10 a.m. at 20 Greenbrier. Anyone with items to donate may bring them to 20 Greenbrier between 2 and 5 p.m.
