A Rittman bird lover notes local boys harming birds with guns and slingshots, stressing birds’ protected status. The piece describes sparrow and white-throated sparrow appearances, plumage, and songs while recounting their roles in eating weed seeds and insects.
The Women mission groups announce meetings on June 4 with leaders Mrs C Robinet and Mrs Russell Frey, election of officers for St Francis Xavier Circle 9, and a United Presbyterian Women program on June 4 featuring a Medical Missions theme. New granddaughter Georgana Kay to Mr and Mrs Donald Holm of Wadsworth. Edwin James born to Dr and Mrs F M Vargas at St Thomas Akron. Milton Township trustees set 8 p.m. Tuesday at Township Hall Sterling. Brenda Armbrust turns two today.
Ni-Jac Corporation will build its Route 548 headquarters east of Rittman to house the Medicant product line. President Nick Miga says about 100 women will be employed initially as production and distribution begin, with a nationwide campaign planned. RAID will host a get acquainted luncheon to discuss plans as construction and land purchases finalize.
The commencement speaker will be Philip L. Gould pastor of First Christian Church Wadsworth. Exercises begin at 8 p m with the band performing the pro cessional and two seniors graduating. Baccalaureate is Sunday May 31 at 8 p m at the high school with Rev James Watt as speaker. Scholarships and PTA grants plus Rotary Club honors will be announced. Robert McComas will deliver the class address and Richard Simonton will present the class memorial. Gould, a Pittsburgh native, has served in Wadsworth since 1945 and holds degrees from Butler Yale. He formerly led a Shreve pastorate and is active in church boards. His wife Mrs Gould supervised at Apple Creek State Hospital. they have three children Phyllis Patricia and Larry.
Memorial Day observances in Rittman include a 10:30 a.m. parade led by American Legionaires with color guard and rifle squad. Participants march from Sterling Avenue to South Main Street, ending at the city square for bus or car transport to the cemetery services. Carl Bradford serves as master of ceremonies.
A J Grant long time works supervisor at Morton Salt will retire after 37 years, official date May 31 with last day May 29 due to Memorial Day observances. He started at Ohio Salt in 1923, left to study at Ohio State, and returned in 1927. He lives at 18 Third Street, Rittman, with wife Margaret and has three children.
The used clothing depot at Rittman Community Building West Ohio Avenue will close for the summer period Wednesday June 3 at 3 p.m. Opening date for the depot will be Saturday Aug 15 with hours 9 to 11 a.m. The two day per week schedule resumes 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and 9-11 a.m. Saturdays through the school year. For emergencies call Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney at 925-2289.
Mrs Oliver Bolton will be guest of honor at a Rittman Republican Women coffee hosted by Mrs Carl Bradford at 315 North Street on Wednesday June 3 from 10 to 11 am. She will discuss her husband Congressman Bolton's record and life in Washington and outline his bid for Congressman at Large with three Wayne County appearances planned on the same day.
Rittman Junior High set Recognition Day for Tuesday June 2 at 745 p m at the high school. Four students will deliver original essays on Patriotism in America and speak along with musical performances under director Gene Sharick. Diplomas will be distributed by Board of Education member Ed Taylor.
Co recreation director Jerry Whims announced pool pricing for the summer with opening May 30 under Bruce Leatherman and John Simonton. Daily admission is 30 cents for children and 60 cents for adults. Season tickets cost 7 dollars for students and adults and 18 dollars per family. Hours run 1 to 9 p.m. daily.
Mayor Ashton Hall proclaims the week of June 17 as Clean up Week in Rittman. The JayCees sponsor the program. JayCees president Jerry Lambert says a citywide trash pickup will occur on Thursday.
Connie Starling daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Starling will reign as Girl Scout Poppy Queen in the Memorial Day parade. She won the honor for her part in the sale of pop pies on Poppy Day. First runnerup was Shirley Gunnels, second Martha Burns, third LuAnn Ferrer. American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the sale. Dora Wright urges members to assemble Saturday morning at Sterling Avenue and South Main Street to march. Poppy Day sales totaled 364.78 with 44 scouts and 34 adults participating. proceeds support welfare.
Bob Williams won the Rittman Press Athlete Scholar Award at the Booster Club banquet. He earned a 3.0 GPA over three years at Rittman High School and lettered in football track and basketball. The trophy is 16 inches and will join past winners in the school display.
One hundred seventy Girl Scouts from Rittman plus 80 Brownies join 28 Senior Scouts for a three day camp at Hillside Park Clinton starting Friday June 5 with registration 3 30 to 4 30 p m. Troops 649 and 726 lead by Mrs Donald Ritchie Mrs Ed Taylor Mrs Dean Brenneman and Mrs Julius Roseberg organize events through Sunday June 7 including campfire, rise and shine at 7 15, swimming, camp skills, church services and parent visitation.
Council returns to chambers with 22 Delta Club members watching as mosquitoes and street oiling top the agenda. City Manager Charles Mann says oiling starts in two weeks with bids to open June 3 for a 30800 project and Stonebraker Tree Service to spray mosquitos starting June 1. residents may call 9252525 for spraying. council also weighs vacant-lot mowing up to three times a summer and other village maintenance plans. The group donates 50 to the American Legion for war-grave flowers in Milton Township and approves sewer work on West Sunset Drive and sale of an old tanker stored at the firehouse. They seek price estimates for paving on Metzg er Avenue Rittman Road and West Ohio Avenue and pass Rittman Building Code on third reading.
Public hearing on Milton Township Zoning Code scheduled for Thursday May 28 at Sterling Fire Station. Trustees approved the code two weeks ago and announced it will be placed on the November ballot.
Wayne County Tuberculosis and Health Association schedules the Mobile Chest X-ray Unit in Rittman on Monday June 8. Location is the square with hours 9 30 to 12 30 in the morning and 1 30 to 4 30 in the afternoon. The unit visits Wayne County monthly offering X ray service with no charge for those 65 and older.
Two people were hurt in a vehicle collision on the square last week. Everett Workman of 32 North Fifth Street and Patricia Becerra of Rittman were treated and released from the hospital. Driver Virginia Simonton of 80 Greenwood Avenue was cited for failure to yield.
