Cathy Imhoff of Rittman placed 19th state English 10 in Wooster College tests, with three other Rittman High School students ranking high in the Northeastern Ohio district. Terry Lukach was sixth in state in schools of our size for Spanish II, Sharon Steiner 11th in Spanish II, Fred Fetzer 13th in World History, Kathy Melenbacker ninth in Spanish I, Wayne Dysinger ninth in Algebra II, plus honorable mentions for Dan Winkler, Janie Pyle, and Karen McComas. Additional students took tests due to high local scores including Bill Donaldson, Ronald Gasser, Bob Williams, and others in various subjects.
Milton Township schedules a public hearing May 28 at the Sterling Fire Station to discuss a proposed Zoning Code. Trustees advanced the measure two weeks prior. the code may appear on the November ballot. The plan covers location, lot sizes, open spaces, land use, and improvement needs for four town area.
Summer rec program directors announce a city wide line up for June through August. Parks open June 8 with life guards and girl scouts aiding. pools run 1 to 9 daily after school with Red Cross swim programs and shows. Baseball, softball, basketball, tennis and track featured for juniors and seniors, plus a Fun Festival finale on August 1.
At a recent scout dinner members of Cub Scout Pack 3400 received advancement and badges. Seven cubs advanced to Scouting ranks. Lowell Stone Gary Taylor Jim Rohrer Mick Prentovich and Gary Crank will join Boy Scout Troop 410. Other moves include Richard Biegler William McCall to Troop 405 eight Bobcat badges for Jessie Loyd Donald Clifton Alvin Maibach and Gary Taylor and lion badges for Duane Lind Allan Ramsier Danny Baker Bruce Bechtel and Alvin Neiman. Denners badges went to Kenneth Talbot Jeff Lunter while Jim Brown earned a one year pin. Webelos badges were earned by Gary Taylor Jim Rohrer William McCall Mick Prentovich Lowell Stone and Richard Beigler Jack Griffith and Gary Taylor received gold arrows.
Phillip Buckholdt of Wadsworth Road 3 was fined 180 in Mayor Ashton Hall’s court Monday after his car struck a parked vehicle owned by Guitar Affairs on Hillcrest. Buckholdt was apprehended shortly after and charged with intoxication leaving the scene of an accident and driving left of center.
Baccalaureate ceremonies for Rittman High School's 1964 graduates are set for Sunday May 31 at 8 pm. Rev James E Watt of Milton Presbyterian Church will deliver the address on A Sound Investment Plan with the girls chorus and six local pastors participating. The program includes processional Pomp and Circumstance played by Linda Langton, invocation by Brother Robert Hanze, benediction by Rev Lawrence Orcena, and prayers by Rev Charles Turner. Commencement exercises begin on Thursday June 4 at 8 pm with Rev Philip L Gould as speaker.
Rittman area merchants run a weekly promotion called the Lucky Barrel with a $300 prize. Residents 18 plus from Rittman Creston Smithville Doylestown Marshallville Sterling and Seville sign at the Store of the Week and have capsules placed in the barrel. A drawing happens Thursday at 430 pm. If the signer is registered the winner is chosen. if not the prize grows by $50.
Workmen press ahead Tuesday at the Kroger supermarket building, assembling brick and cement block walls. Completion of this section is expected Saturday, after delays due to wet conditions. Next week will see erection of steel girders and roof. contracts awarded for water, sewer, 30 hp air conditioning, heating, and plumbing systems with Lehr Plumbing and Gary Longworth handling extra plans.
Unity Past Presidents of Worens Benefit Association will attend the state convention in Akron June 7 8 9 at Akron Sheraton Hotel. A picnic at Barberton Park will provide entertainment for the July 9 meeting. Members met Thursday for luncheon at Chicken Inn Western Star Fifteen were present. Plans for the convention were made. Verses on Mothers Day were read.
Special honors went to Sherri Hunt and Robert Bob Reffert as Top Achievers at Junior Achievements annual award banquet at the American Legion Hall. JA awards recognized top sales, delegates named for the National Junior Achievement conference at Indiana University. Tom Talbot of Inko Arts named alternate. Advisors to the young achievers were recognized for their support.
