Memorial poppies will be sold Friday and Saturday in the business section of Rittman by American Legion Auxiliary members. The poppies are made by disabled war veterans who are paid for their work. Proceeds support relief for disabled veterans and their dependents. Committee members are Mrs. Jay Hrner, Mrs. Ed Boyle, Mrs. Leonard Gordon, and Mrs. Harvey Straits.
In just over a year the Liberty street to Sunset corridor west of N Mant has evolved from a gulley into an attractive residential section. Paul Emch conceived laid out and built the allotment now with ten houses completed or under construction and plans to expand. John Schaeller built a house on W Sunset. Fred Ramsier constructed seven more in Emch’s allotment. Most homes are Emch designed. four remain under construction with others sold, with two identical houses in the allotment.
BIRTHS list several新borns at Wadsworth Hospital including a daughter to Mr and Mrs Salsbury and a daughter to Mr and Mrs Paul Tucker with dates May 18 and May 20. A son born to Mr and Mrs Wellman near Rittman May 23 and sons to Mr and Mrs Bert Pfelrey and Mr and Mrs Curtis Fortner at Wadsworth Hospital on May 23.
The Booster Club sponsors a Kentucky Gunrunner jamboree at the high school auditorium Friday June 11 at 8 pm. Jack Wenger and Robert Steiner handle ticket sales via Booster members. Proceeds fund school athletics.
A leading Akron real estate firm announced a housing project in Rittman to construct about 35 homes with potential for 35 more. The decision follows a boost for the effort as grading of the area is scheduled to begin next week.
Memorial Day events begin Sunday at 1 pm in Rittman with a parade forming at Gordons Garage on Ernest Street and moving to the square. At 2 pm a cemetery program includes a high school band, Gettysburg address by Mrs. R. D. Wenger, main address by Rev John Kindswatter, and a final benediction. Navy memorials and closing ceremony at Soldiers’ Circle follow.
Chris Ehemann of 48 S Third St won the $100 Bonus Night prize. Second prize went to Mrs Asa Boyes of 165 W State St and third to Mrs Lester Wiles of 156 S Park St. The winning ticket was distributed by Williams' Restaurant.
Village of Rittman proclaims Saturday May 29 as Poppy Day in honor of fallen service members. Mayor Melvin R. Ritter urges citizens to wear the Memorial Poppy in observance and remembrance of World War I and II sacrifices.
Ralph Repke of Herberich Hall Harter Co Akron announced completion of an option on northwestern Ritmans acreage. Grading will begin next week with power shovels and graders reshaping two gulleys to create a subdivision north of W Sunset Drive west of Willow Brook. Engineers prepare plans for FHA submission while local supply dealers and labor survey plans are set.
More than 3500 visitors toured the Ohio Boxboard plant during the first open house since 1943. Guides led groups through operations, highlighting a clean facility, coal use of 400 tons daily, 10 million gallons of water, and 21 acres of floor space. Donuts and carton samples were provided. Pete Lalich oversaw most arrangements.
