Sides Extend Labor Talks Recess To June Eight

Both sides agreed to recess negotiations until June 8 and to resume talks then. The current contract remains in full force and effect indefinitely unless terminated, with no automatic end date and no pressure of a deadline.

Chamber Appeals For Funds To Finish City Landscape

The Chamber of Commerce urged donations to the City Landscape fund which stands at 379 dollars with 121 dollars left to reach the goal. Local firms and workers supplied heavy equipment and time for grading the city dump site while fill dirt and top soil were provided by Charles Zollinger and Don Niehaus. Packages Corp and Morton Salt donated trucks and drivers, along with city crews. Jim Frye and Ivan King supervise Saturday’s operations and the project shows a neater entrance to Rittman.

Council approves subdivision street paving law and rules

Council passes a law requiring subdivision street paving once 50 percent of lots have houses or 60 percent sold. Corner lot assessments will be pro rated among adjacent properties. The measure followed a year of study and talks with developers.

Paul Wellman of Rittman pleads innocent to nonsupport charges in Common Pleas Court. Trial date set for June 7. Attorney Jack Critchfield of Wooster represents Wellman.

Marshallville Man Robbed of $400

Ernest Hollinger of Marshallville RD 1 was robbed by three armed men who gained entry at 10 p.m. after a sock masked duo tied him and disabled the telephone. Mrs. Hollinger freed him when she returned at 11 p.m. The residence sits on County Road 116. The suspects ranged in ages from 18 to 40.

Three Die On New Route 5 Bypass Crash

On the new Route 5 bypass south of Doylestown a two car collision killed Raphael Lafferty 36 of Columbus and Mr and Mrs John Hagey of Barberton. Mrs Jack Humphrey of Doylestown jumped from the Lafferty car and survived with minor injuries. Hagey died at the scene and her husband died five hours later at Orrville Dunlap Memorial Hospital.

Recognition day honors top seniors at high school

Achievements go to Vera Wheeler and John Kunkler who earned the Danforth Award for school participation scholarship and aptitude. Kathleen Moore and Elizabeth Hostetler received top scholarship honors with state rankings in Spanish II and Latin II.

Rezoning Moves Rittman Shopping Center Plans Forward

The council approved a 6-0 rezoning of the Clyde Semler property and adjacent land from residential to commercial, with 17 acres along North Main Street and Home Street set for commercial use and 3 acres switched to residential. Semler had indicated he would pursue a shopping center if rezoning occurred, and merchants expressed interest in the project.

Hearings Continue Against Teens in Local Break-Ins

In Wayne County Juvenile Court, three teens aged 14 15 and 16 from Rittman and Wadsworth had hearings postponed to June 10 on charges of breaking into North Street School Artcraft Printing and Shock Lumber Company. A separate 13 year old from Rittman also faced break in charges for taking a camera and watch from a home.

Memorial Day Parade to Honor War Dead in Rittman

Rittman residents and veterans nationwide join a Memorial Day parade Monday May 30 starting 10 30 am at Erie and North Main Streets. The procession goes to the square then to the cemetery for services with Howard Taylor Alliance Ohio speaking and William Breece reading the Gettysburg Address.

Poppy Day in Rittman Stages Weekend Sale

Saturday will be Poppy Day in Rittman with Girl Scouts downtown selling red flowers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The top poppy seller will be named Poppy Queen and ride in the Memorial Day parade. Poppy Poster contest winners include Patty Pittman, Ann Hobell, Mary Dorothy Lennlon, Linda Luikhuf, Emma Ramsier, and others across grades 4 to 9.

Rev Plummer to Leave Rittman Church in June

Rev J W Plummer of the Evangelical United Brethren Church will depart Rittman in June to take a new post. He and Mrs Plummer have served seven years. The assignment will be announced at the EUB Church Conference at Lynwood Park, Vermilion, the week of June 13. A new minister will be named for Rittman.

Goody Charged In Stabbing Of Wife

Charles Edward Goody Dear 33 is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife Vergie 33 in Creston after a quarrel over divorce papers. Mrs Cynthia White police say was stabbed and injured as Goody attacked during the same incident. Goody surrendered to police about an hour later and awaits Wooster Municipal Court arraignment.

Baccalaureate and Commencement Dates Set for June

Baccalaureate services for graduating seniors are scheduled June 5 at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium with Rev Doyle Miller chairing and prayers by Rev James Watt and Rev Joe Thompson. The 65th annual commencement is June 9 at 8 p.m. in the high school. 63 seniors will hear Rev John Arthur Clippinger deliver the address and Kathy Moore give the class speech.
