Swimming Pool To Open May 28 In Rittman

Rittman Recreation Director Homer Pyle says the pool opens Saturday May 28 with hours 1 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. over Memorial weekend. Afterward hours are 4 to 9 p.m. on school terms except weekends. Moonlight swims on Fridays. married couples 9 to 11:45 p.m. Monday nights. Fence moved for sunbathing. Season tickets go on sale May 2% with family $20, married couple $10, single $8, student $6. General admission 20 cents children and 50 cents adults.

JA Banquet Honors Junior Achievers and Leaders

Peggy Frey and Joe Felix top the Junior Achievement Future Unlimited Banquet awards as outstanding girl and boy for the year. Honors also went to the Packo Company and top salesmen Karen Adams and Paul Copley. Paul Belcher Jr. urged JA members that America is not on the brink of war and business will not be affected.

Rittman Becomes City as Population Tops 5398

Official figures released Monday show Rittman population at 5398, surpassing the 5000 threshold to gain city status. It marks the largest percentage population jump in Wayne County, with 41.6 percent growth since 1950. Charter form of home rule to take effect December 1, 1960.

Rittman cleanup drive ends Saturday with JayCees help

The annual Rittman cleanup drive ends Saturday. Trash pickups will be made at all houses north of Ohio Avenue and Rittman Road. The JayCees will assist the street department with the final pickup.

Auto Safety Check Begins This Friday in Rittman

Rittman owners may receive a free Circle of Safety checkup starting Friday at Rich Motors Rupp Brothers Pontiac Hile Motor Sales B and W Oil Hugh L Strickland Don K Freed Agency plus the Rittman JayCees. Cars are inspected for defects and a safety sticker is issued if clear. The two week drive aims to reduce unsafe vehicles and prevent further stops in neighboring communities.

Boosters Elect And Make Plans For Coming Year

Rittman Booster Club began its year with officer elections and project planning. Jim Witzberger became president Neil Milford named vice president Mrs Warren Keister elected secretary Ed Bernhardt stayed secretary Jim Frye Bill Williams and Ken Leatherman joined the Board of Directors with three more to be chosen. The group met with the School Board and Ohio Edison about football field rights and a new lighting system. Potential projects include new bleachers selling programs and season tickets. An executive committee meeting in two weeks will finalize details.

Appoint Judge To Hear Watts Case On Friday

Judge Wayne Badger of Ashland County is named to hear the first degree murder trial of Kenneth Watts of Rittman. Chief Justice Carl Weygandt made the appointment after Judge Adrian asked to be relieved due to previous law partner ties to Watts attorney F Emerson Logee. Badger will hear a motion on the arraignment day in Wayne County Common Pleas Court, Logee arguing Watts rights were violated by the lack of a preliminary hearing before the Grand Jury. Watts faces murder charges in the shooting death of Mr and Mrs William Fender of Warwick and in shooting to wound Mrs Marilyn Wagner of Rittman.

Three Local Teens Admit Theft Spree In Wooster Case

Three teenagers from Rittman and Wadsworth face charges after admitting a string of shoplifting and breaking and entering incidents. A 14 year old led to two co defendants 15 and 16, with break ins at North Street School and Art Craft Printing on Industrial Street May 6 and Shook Lumber on Salt Street. The trio also took seven cigarette cartons and three lighters from Stepfields Pharmacy sold to local youths. Five additional youths from Wadsworth were detained for disturbing the peace, with two later surrendering. All face hearings in Wooster and Rittman courts.

Trustees Advertise For New Fire Equipment

Milton Township Trustees moved quickly after approving a fire protection levy to buy emergency gear. Chairman Wilford Blatter said the board met with Rittman Fire Chief Ron Goodhart and Sterling Fire Chief Chef Winkler to pass a resolution to advertise for a resuscitator oxygen equipment a light plant and more hose. Estimated cost six thousand dollars. bids are due to the Trustees by June 7.

Rittman Township Trustee Leads City Dump Landscape Drive

Donation drive for the Rittman dump landscape project raises up to 346 with cash from Morton Salt and 100 from the township trustees. Local firms pledge services and plants including Dana Kreider nursery and Wade Jacquays. The Garden Club oversees planting along Route 94 and Sunset, with lime, fill, hedge plants, and lawn work donated. A time capsule will record contributors for future uncovering in 2000.

Calm atmosphere marks labor talks at Packaging Corp

Bargaining between Packaging Corporation of America and the International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers continues with a calm atmosphere. Local 150 IBPSP president Holly Starcher reported a 7 to 1 union strike authorization last Tuesday while both sides report progress on bargaining. The contract expires June 1 but remains in effect until a 10 day termination notice.

Entre Nous Dance Plans Finalized With Hawaiian Theme

At the May 10 meeting the Entre Nous Club set plans for a Saturday dance at the American Legion Hall with a Hawaiian theme. A dinner was arranged at Diamond Grill in Akron. Officers elected to take over in fall are President Mrs Carl Bowen Vice President Mrs Homer Castor Secretary Mrs Raymond Telford and Treasurer Mrs Robert Wenger. Meeting dates will be added to the Community Birthday Calendar.

Doylestown Eyes 300000 Gallon Sewage Plant Plan

Doylestown Council and Board of Public Affairs agreed Monday night to build a 300000 gallon per day sewage treatment plant at the site of the current insufficient installation. Estimated cost runs 81000 dollars with rebuilding and expansion to serve the George S Petit Poultry Company while allowing village growth and limiting reserve strain.

Department Plans To Relocate Bloody 94

Ash land division head Ed win L Toberen of the State Highway Department announces plans to relocate route 94 from Rittman to Wadsworth. An origin and destination survey is in progress, showing most traffic runs between the two communities, with a by pass not needed for Wadsworth. The full report will follow.

Memorial Day Services Planned in Rittman

Rittman residents will honor war dead with Memorial Day events on May 30. A parade starts at 10 30 a.m. followed by services at the Rittman Cemetery. Further details will be announced next week as the program is finalized.

Drama Clinic At Attman High Friday Evening

The speech department of Attman High School sponsors a drama clinic on Friday May 20 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. One act plays and monologues will be directed by speech instructor Fred Hoenicke. Proceeds buy speech equipment. Tickets are 60 cents at the door or from any speech student.

Rotary Starts Fund Drive For School

Rittman Rotary launched a campaign to raise funds for a new mentally handicapped school. Robert Dickerson, president of the Wayne County Society For Handicapped Children, said one local child is eligible now with another due in about three years. He noted 25 county children need a special school, but current YMCA facilities will only seat 16. A three room modern structure is under construction near the Children's home north of Wooster, with plans in place.
