Stebbins National Bank in Creston robbed Tuesday afternoon of an undisclosed sum around 2 30 pm DST. The robbers fled in a 1951 Oldsmobile sedan with dark green body and light green top. Police and FBI suspect the two Boyes brothers of Rittman, though unconfirmed.
Don Dupper, pool director for the summer, announced the pool may open on Memorial Day. The facility has a rubber base paint that needs a week to dry before filling. If opening is delayed, efforts will be made to open the pool the following day.
Rain greeted Maurice Saturday as the American Legion carnival moved to N Main St recreation area for Sunday and Monday. The show, which began Tuesday, runs through Saturday and features a kiddies matinee Saturday with all rides at 10 cents.
Roy Boyes 20 of Rutman Road was sentenced to 10 to 25 years in Mansfield Reformatory after admitting involvement in the Creston Egg Auction armed robbery last November. He will serve concurrently with Stark County terms while still at large, with brothers Trent and Robert Boyes sought nationwide for related bank and armed robberies.
The American Legion Post 423 announces Memorial Day events in Rittman with a morning parade led by the high school band and veterans from four wars. Past District Commander Harry Eaton will give the day’s address with Lincoln’s Gettysburg remarks by Mrs. R. Wenger.

William Cook of Cleveland fined 100 dollars and costs and three days in jail for driving a motorcycle while intoxicated. John Sword fined 10 dollars and costs for intoxication. James Starling fined 3 dollars and costs for driving with insufficient rights. Eastern Star meeting set for Thursday at 7:30 PM at the Masonic Hall with Mrs. Marvin Batman presiding.
Forty two seniors graduate at the Rittman High School auditorium in a 8 p.m. ceremony led by speaker Dr George E Parkinson pastor of Canton First Presbyterian. The event features processional pomp and circumstance, class addresses, ensembles, and valedictory notes with National Honor Society members listed among graduates.
About 100 boys aged nine to 15 attended a sign up meeting in Rittman for a Hot Stove baseball league with six teams. Adults are urged to help. play is set to begin by the second week in June with awards for sportsmanship and MVP. Committees for finance publicity grounds scheduling were named and more volunteers are welcome.
Bible schools for school age and some pre school children are planned by local churches. Parents interested in registering their children are asked to contact the minister of their church.
Rittman council discussed Hickin Avenue petition from property owners to drop sidewalks and install curbs and gutters to widen the street. They asked the engineer to prepare information for next meeting to pursue legislation. Storm sewers were also debated with emphasis on adjoining properties installing sewers to defray curb and gutter costs.
Clarence E F Meredith aged 34 was struck by a train at 2 30 am Monday near Rittman Ohio while seated on the track with his head in his hands. The engineer could not stop the train from about two miles northeast of town. Funeral services are planned for Thursday in Hubbards town West Virginia.
The Herald Mougey titled as chairman of the judging committee announced that all twelve winners of the Youth Courtesy Week contest in Rittman will be awarded a three day all expense paid trip to Niagara Falls next week.
Only two bids were received for Willow Brook vacant lots in a federal sale last week and neither was satisfactory. Housing officials told the Rittman Press that the property will be offered on a negotiated basis and sale prices for the parcels will be announced soon.
Funeral services were held in Childersburg Alabama for Hazel White 59 formerly of Rittman killed in an auto accident near there. She is survived by husband Lyle two sons Frederick and Lyle Jr parents Charles and Mrs Cowhick of Creston five sisters including Mrs James Peacock Mrs Howard Babbs Mrs Hobart Chapman and Mrs Eugene Vance and two brothers John of Burbank Roy of Sullivan.
A local scout committee reports $332 raised toward an $800 goal as of press time. Treasurer Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney announced the drive ends by June 1, with no door to door canvassing. About 200 scouts in Rittman participate, with a $800 annual budget covering leadership, fees, literature, badges, and more. Contributions can be mailed to Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney, Treasurer, Rittman Scout Organization, 41 W. Liberty St.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces Poppy Day in Rittman Friday and Saturday May 27-28. Residents are urged to wear a memorial poppy to honor national war dead and donate to aid disabled veterans and needy children. Mrs. Hal Miller leads the local poppy committee and emphasizes the day supports year round service.
Rittman will hold a homecoming in 1956 and every five years thereafter. The decision followed a Thursday meeting of 17 representatives from local organizations. The committee will reconvene next spring to arrange details for the 1956 event as majority opinion favored five year intervals.
