Wayne County Derby's scheduled July 17 race offers the winner a direct berth to the national finals in Akron later this summer, advancing the victor to a national stage.
The Ohio Boxboard Company at its Rittman plant signed a supplementary wage agreement raising hourly pay by five cents for all hourly employees. The measure, ratified May 27 at Rittman High School, takes effect June 1 1955 under the current contract through June 1 1956. Local Union 150 and IBPMPMW officials and company representatives participated in the negotions.
The Better Business Bureau of Akron warns the area about itinerant magazine solicitors not registered or affiliated with the National Publishers Association. Reports describe high pressure tactics and potential unauthorized subscription sales. Public urged to report abusive behavior to the police.
Four local churches plan Community Daily Vacation Bible Schools for children ages 3 and up from June 6 to 17 at North Street school and church buildings. Leaders include Rev. D B Davidson and Rev. J E Wheeling with assistants from six area denominations. Parents urged to register children with pastors before the start.

Funeral services for Harry Grant Rock 64 were held Tuesday at Hilliard Funeral Home. A lifelong Wadsworth resident and Ohio Injector Co. employee he died Saturday at his home 134 Fairlawn Ave. He is survived by his wife Eva a daughter Alice Brown four grandchildren three brothers Ralph Roy and Allen and a sister Ella Horner. Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth.
Richard F. Kanehl son of Mr and Mrs F O Kanehl of 111 W Liberty St will graduate from Miami University Oxford on Monday June 6th.
Residents of Clinton Street push for zoning rules as a tire pile owned by Buxbaum Co appears behind homes. The plant run by Stewart Cameron uses tires for patches and rubber products. Fire safety deemed nonhazardous, health inspector to decide mosquito and rat risk, while critics fear plant shutdowns and job losses.

Army Pvt. Paul K. Howard Jr. of Creston has arrived in Germany and joins the 9th Division of the Sth Infantry, part of the U S Seventh Army stationed in Goeppingen. He entered the Army in October 1954 and completed basic training at Fort Jackson South Carolina.
Russell E. Saylor 61 of Vermillion-on-the Lake died Tuesday of a heart attack. Funeral services were held Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home. He was a designing engineer for National Tube Co. of Lorain and formerly worked in Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife Ruth two sons and a sister burial in Lorain.
Short services for Martha Rohrer 72 were at 323 College St Wadsworth then Bethel Mennonite Church at 2 30 p m Burial followed in Lower Mennonite Church Cemetery She was born in Mahoning County and had lived in Wadsworth 48 years Survivors include husband Clayton three daughters Mrs Marjorie Landis R D Rittman Mrs Ella Kilmer R D Wadsworth Mrs Ruth Mumaw R D Wooster three sons Ivan Bartonsville Vermont Maynard Hartville and Melvin R D Wadsworth 24 grandchildren three great grandchildren and sister Mrs Mary Snyder Columbiana
Twelve youngsters earned all expense trips to Niagara Falls New York as part of a city wide Youth Courtesy Week. Winners include Alien Weber Carol Butcher Thomas Beck Penny Reffert Janice Goodhart Bill Breece Dottie Huff Annette Gaborsky Nadine Brodbeck Jimmy Mullens and Jimmy Goffinch.
Delores Wertz, eight, released from Wadgworth hospital after an Thursday accident at Third and Ohio. Don Mills drove east on Ohio Ave as children played on the curb. Wertz ran into the right front fender after Mills swerved and braked. Skid marks measured about a car length. Mills was not charged. Wertz treated for cracked ribs and bruises.
Fred B. Wells 75 died of a heart attack at Dunlap Memorial Hospital after being found at his son’s Crown Hill Road home. Wells, born in New York, led Ohio Boxboard Co. in Rittman from 1913 to 1938, moved to Orrville in 1942, and belonged to local Masonic groups. He is survived by his son A. W. Wells, three grandchildren, and sister Martha Blatter. wife Cora preceded him. Services were held Sunday at Auble Hooley funeral home with burial at Crown Hill Cemetery.
The Milton Presbyterian Church hosts a pre sale event at the Hermina Lendy Society on Saturday organized by the W Frye Agen group.
Mrs. Ben Kay of the Rittman Lions Club completed a Cub Scout basic training course at Wadsworth and received a graduation certificate from Bob Kiefer district training chairman and Paul Gardner Cub commissioner. Other graduates include Mrs. Mary Ketz and Harry Ketz, plus Mrs. Janet Arnold representing Creston PTA, and Florence Woods J Howard Woods Hazel Welday for Seville PTA.
Graveside services were held at Rittman Cemetery for Connie Lynn Salisbury infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orris Salisbury who died at Wadsworth hospital. She is survived by a sister Cathy Sue and grandparents on both sides including Mr. and Mrs. Jake Ott of Rittman and Mr. and Mrs. Waynesbury of Greenup Kentucky. Rev. Albert Honey officiated.
