Indian track star Brad Selbee will represent the school at the sectional tournaments this Friday making history as the first Rittman student to reach this level in five years.
On Friday Ken Jackson son of Mr and Mrs Charles Jackson was elected Senator for the Community and Technical College at Akron University.
Ike Ramsier a former Rittman basketball star will become the first local inductee into the newly formed Wayne County Hall of Fame. Mayor Ash Hall announced the honor noting Ramsier played prewar for the Indians and earned AP All-State honors as a Wayne County cager. Also to be inducted is Don Calabria, now of Rittman, recognized for semi pro softball exploits in the area.
Memorial Day activities mark Rittman events with a 10:30 a.m. parade starting at 10 a.m. Erie Street. The procession ends at the shopping center, followed by services at Rittman Cemetery with VFW and American Legion firing squads at eight cemeteries. Grand Marshal Robert Wenger, WWI veteran, succeeds Walter Keating. Willard Stine of Wadsworth delivers the Memorial Day address.
Jon Hults, son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Hults of 240 W Ohio St, earned the 1976 Scholar Athlete Award at the Rittman High School awards banquet. He carries a 3.916 scholastic average with two varsity letters and plans to attend the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis after graduation.
Medway law enforcement officials arrested Candice Plumeley and Bruce Lawson after a Thursday afternoon raid in the Sleepy Owl Tavern parking lot. Plumeley faces possession for sale and sale of an hallucinogen charges while Lawson is charged with aiding and abetting the sale. Lawson was on bail from prior drug charges. The raid involved Sheriff\'s deputies and Rittman Police and the story continues on page 3.
The Rittman Board approves a new teacher contract package including boosted life insurance to 4 000 and 5 000, Summit County Rider added to Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage, updated Washington National plan, retirement cap raised to 1200, and higher salary schedule from 8 150 to 8 500. The agreement follows earlier REA approval and covers extra duties, fees, and take-home book costs.
A 12 gauge Winchester shotgun valued at 196 dollars was stolen from a Sunset Drive home on May 9. On May 11 a vehicle window on Home Street was broken with flying glass injuring the driver. On May 13 an unknown person let air out of tires and tried to steal a battery on East Ohio Avenue. A CB antenna on Sunset Street was removed from a vehicle track, value 25 dollars. Three dollars in change was stolen from an unlocked residence. Charges have been filed in the car-window incident.
Community events listed include meetings of Grandmothers Club Senior Citizens Rotary and the Kidney Foundation with venues at United Methodist Church Red Cross Building and city hall. Sports plans list Norwayne High School baseball travel to Smithville Medina and district track events plus a prom arts festival and various club meetings through May 25.
