Rick and Sandy Orr of Wadsworth announce the birth of Steven Frederick on May 5 at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Orr of Rittman.
May 5 Bailey C Rittman fined 50 dollars plus 7 dollars costs for shoplifting. Other cases include Stephen Demlow DWI 220 dollars and 7 costs, James Kimes no motorcycle endorsement 30, Robert Ferguson reckless operation 48 7, Willard Miller bad check charges dropped 7, Bruce Lawson reckless 100 7, Kenneth Schauwecker rapid acceleration 35 7, Daniel McCaffrey rapid acceleration forfeited 20, Ronald Smotherman unnecessary noise forfeited 26, Rodney Fetter 50 7 suspended, Allan Smith rapid acceleration forfeited, Ronald Staley rapid acceleration forfeited 20, William Marty speed forfeited 22, Patricia Spencer improper registration display forfeited 35.
Local officials report growing support for Rittman’s bicentennial as Mayor Ashton Hall will present a braided-star flag to the Bicentennial Commission during an 8 p.m. March Of America concert at the Middle School. The commission faces setback with denied state and federal aid for the Gish Tobacco Farm Homestead restoration, but Lindsey Williams says the drive remains on track with $8,500 already raised. The plan includes furnishing a public library reference shelf, marking graves of three Revolutionary War veterans, and bronze plaques for four early settlers. A $50 gift from the Olla Podrida Club aids purchasing flags and medals. The main events include a July 2 Parade Of Youth, a community barbeque, the I Love America pageant, and a fireworks display, plus a Fall Youth Recognition Day.
Moedt faced sharp criticism from Whims and council members over the merit pay system, with claims he did not execute the plan as intended. REA President Valentine urged council scrutiny of negotiations and questioned merit raises. Moedt defended raises, noting he began awarding them, while others pressed for timely evaluations and policy explanations. Additional complaints included harassment over hair length and a drainage issue on Hilly Drive.
Sterling residents question Rittman plans to drill wells that could affect Sterling’s water supply. City and county officials explain aquifer differences and land ownership, while Sterling seeks another meeting as residents complain of drainage issues from federal housing projects. The trustees hire temporary police coverage and address culvert permitting and drainage tiles.
Mary K Kathy Graber vanished after leaving Rittman on December 26 following a minor fender bender. Her mother Jéan Terranova recalls a peaceful Christmas but Kathy did not return, prompting family concern and police follow up. Investigators say the case remains under review as details unfold.
A series of property and vehicle incidents occurred in Rittman May 1 to May 7. Napier narrowly escaped collision with a locomotive on Willow Street May 3. Fraley’s stop sign collision on Erie Street May 6, and seven clothes dryer doors damaged on North Main Street May 4. Battery removal on Ohio Street May 4 and a front windshield smashed on South Main May 4. Tire slashing on Seneca Street May 6 and a BB gun style window shot on Salt Street May 7. May 2 deposits and traffic delays involved Maus and Johnson on South Main Street. May 1 Mowery and Whitenack collision at Sunset and Main Streets.
