In a Tuesday assembly at the high school auditorium outstanding academic achievement and service were recognized. Awards honored science Carolyn Wad language Carolyn Wald mathematics Lewis Smith and others. service awards went to Ann Clarke Marilyn Harrington and Joanne Blatter. District and state scholarship recognitions followed for multiple students across English, Spanish, Latin, bookkeeping, algebra, geometry, social studies, history, biology, chemistry, and general science with several honorable mentions and district placements noted.

Avonell Adams Seriously Hurt In Auto Crash
Avonell Adams daughter of Mr and Mrs Ross Adams is in critical condition at Peoples Hospital Akron. The accident occurred between Akron and Barberton Saturday night when the car went over an embankment after the driver lost control. Adams was the only one seriously injured among four other unidentified companions.

Miss Ann Clarke of 47 Sheldon Ave won the Wayne County Art scholarship for being the most outstanding senior art student at the Wayne County Music Art Festival held Friday April 30 at Norwayne High School. Certificates went to Marilyn Harrington Karen Adams and Antoine Gaborsky. Mr and Mrs Arthur Scott spent the weekend in Millersburg Pa visiting friends and attended the funeral of James Warfel.

Dr Glenn Clayton president of Ashland College will be principal speaker at Rittman High school commencement Friday May 28 at 8 pm DST in the school auditorium. He earned a PhD from Ohio State University in 1948 and has twelve years in public schools including five as superintendent of New Lebanon schools. He has written on history religion education and practical living.

Lions Club Sight Saving Drive Starts May 20
The Lions Club announces a local sight saving drive starting May 20 to raise funds for sight conservation with all expenses covered by club members. The sight conservation committee includes Sherman Dalby William Frey Chester Haulk Willard Hauenstein and Jay Rohrer. DTR McLean spoke on Boats I Have Seen on the Great Lakes at the regular meeting chaired by Raymond Snyder. Booster auction is planned for Friday June 25 at the square with Lawrence Wilmont as chair and Gene Harris co chair. Donors will be collected by volunteers who will call 360 for pickup.

Rites Thursday for Henry Lendy
Funeral services for Henry Lendy, 76, will be held Thursday at 2 pm DST in the Ev U B church. Lendy died Monday morning at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital after five weeks of illness. He lived in the area 56 years and worked as a machinist for Ohio Salt Co until retirement seven years ago. He served 36 years as treasurer of the Ev U B church and belonged to the MacCabees Lodge. Surviving are his wife Alp ha two daughters Florence Ady and Lucille Hange two sons Leland and Ralph and one grandchild. Friends may call at Frederick funeral home Wednesday and interment will be in Rittman cemetery.

Local residents aided in a two hour search for two missing children near Route 94. Louis Phillips and their aunt’s home on Rattan were involved as volunteers used spotlights and a family dog to track the youngsters who were eventually found safe at an aunt’s yard.
