Mr and Mrs Kanehl returned to the U.S. after a Far East trip cut short due to eye trouble.

Steiner Elected Lion President

Vernon Steiner was elected president of Lions Club Monday night for the coming year. Serving with Steiner will be Harold Walker first vice president Tom Haines second vice president Charles Rupp third vice president Len Over secretary Charles Wald treasurer J C Fretwell four farmer and James Witzberger tail twister. Ivan King and Oscar Miracle were elected to serve as directors.

Firefighters Battle PCA Plant Blazes Without Major Damage

Rittman volunteers and Packaging Corporation workers contained a fire in the Paper Machine Dry End at the PCA plant Tuesday night with minimal damage and no injuries. A PCA official cited time loss as the main cost. Fire crews returned Wednesday night to extinguish a small transformer fire at the same plant.

Editorial condemns Route 94 between Rittman and Wadsworth for deadly crashes and intoxicated drivers. It cites fatal underpass crash on April 2 involving Daniel Snyder and a reckless driver facing manslaughter charges.

Eugene Gish 34 Buried After Wooster Funeral Service

Funeral services were held at McIntire Funeral Home Wooster for Eugene N Gish 34 of 319 Blessing Ave Wooster formerly of Rittman who died after a brief illness. He was born Jan 17 1927 in Canton son of Gale and Edna Rothmeyer Gish and a Rittman High School graduate. He worked 12 years for Rubbermaid Inc as an IBM operator and served in the army 1945 46 in the 37th Infantry Division service company. He was a member of Wooster Toastmasters Rittman Junior Chamber of Commerce Wadsworth American Legion Post and Rittman Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving are his wife Ellen three children John Patricia and Pamela a sister Joyce Mumaw of Smithville Madisonburg his parents of Rittman and grandmother Mrs Charles Gish of Rittman. Burial was in Rittman Cemetery. Contributions to Wayne County Unit American Cancer Society.

Hanson Co Presidents Of Rittman PTA Elected

Mr and Mrs Ted Hanson will serve as co-presidents for the PTA next school year after officers were elected last Thursday. Other officers include Don Ritchie first vice president Milton Hughes Jr second vice president Homer Castor third vice president George Hileman recording secretary Lloyd Shellvamner corresponding secretary Jay Rohrer treasurer Silas Dobbins Wayne County Council representatives and John Stillwagner historian. The group approved $100 for rights to future minstrel shows and high school use and $15 for a new dictionary for the Commercial department. Dr Lewis Harris urged school improvement and meeting with congressmen for favorable legislation. Mrs Amy Sunderlal, a visitor from India, attended.

Driver Fined After Bloody 94 Crash Leaves Eight Hurt

Robert Dailmont Graham of Creston received thirty days in jail a $250 fine and a one year license suspension for DUI in a three car crash on Route 94 Friday night. Eight people were injured with five hospitalized at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital including Elizabeth Harris in critical condition.

Band Parents Strive Toward Calendar Goal

Band parents discuss calendar sales for the Community Birthday Calendar at a May meeting led by Mrs Willis Lance. Totals incomplete but show improvement over last year as a high quota is targeted. Cadet and Junior bands host a concert May 23 at 7 30 pm in the high school gym.

McCormac Heads Welcome Wagon Newcomers Officers

Mrs John McCormac heads the list of new officers for Welcome Wagon Newcomers Club after elections Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs Harold Youman. Co hosts were Mrs Robert Newland Mrs Stanley Walker and Mrs Clyde McCray. Other officers elected were Mrs Donald Austin vice president Mrs James Watt secretary and Mrs Sam Schwarskopf treasurer. Installations set for a family picnic at 4 pm Sunday June 11 in Central Park. The club donated $50 to the Rittman Library Building Fund. Si Dobbins presented a mouth to mouth resuscitation film and demonstrated artificial respiration methods.

It’s a Girl Mann at City Manager’s Home

Judy Mann presented her husband Charles Mann with an eight pound two ounce girl named Lisa Kaye early Monday morning. The child joins sisters Denny and Kenny at the Mann home at 52 N Metzger Avenue.

Council Awards Two Contracts

The council approved two contracts in a brief meeting. Pacific Construction Company of Akron wins the sewage treatment plant addition project for 227,954 with 300 days to complete. Walter Jones Construction Company of Wooster lands the oil Rittman streets aid project for 8,199.79 and starts work at once.

Reffert and Brodbeck Win Highest School Award

Penny Reffert and Bruce Brodbeck received Riitman High School Recognition Day honors at Thursday assembly. Faculty and administration selected the seniors for the top award and presented it during the afternoon event.

Sterling Man Dies After Fall At Akron Plant

Wilfred Bill Baughman 47 of Sterling RD 1 died at Barberton Citizens Hospital after injuries from a May 10 fall at the Firestone synthetic plant in Akron. Funeral services were held at McIntire Funeral Home in Wooster with Rev Robert Brown officiating. Burial followed in Wooster. He was a plumber for Soehlen Piping Co. of Louisville and a member of Akron Local 419 plumbers union. Survived by wife Florence, three sons Raymond Smithville, James and Wilford at home, three daughters Kay Markley Wooster, Diane Coffman Ashland, Patsy Gresham Akron, step-daughter Pamela Boreman at home, five brothers and eight sisters, many more relatives, and four grandchildren. His obituary notes extensive survivors from Orrville, Ashland, Wooster, Smithville, and Sterling.

William Paulos 70 buried after funeral services

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for William N Paulos 70 of 60 Sheldon Avenue who died Monday morning at his home. Born in Pera Greece he lived in the area about 10 years, mainly in Rittman with periods in Wooster and Wadsworth. He retired in 1956 from the Ohio Boxboard Company after 14 years employed. In 1926 and 1927 he owned restaurants in Rittman and Wadsworth. He was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret in 1943 a son and two daughters. Survived by his wife Clara Straits Paulos a son Donald at home another son William J a daughter Mrs Doris White a brother and two sisters in Greece and three grandchildren. Rev F D Donaldson officiated at Gillman Haines Funeral Home with burial in Rittman.

Watershed Group Tours Proposed Dam Sites in Region

Muskingum Conservancy and Chippewa Watershed Board of Directors met in Rittman on Tuesday for a 11 am tour of proposed dam sites and the planned reservoir area between Rittman and Wadsworth. Fred Neuenschwander of the Wadsworth Chamber of Commerce led the visit.
