Watts' Attorney Defends Improper Charge Plea
Kenneth Watts of Rittman did not plead guilty or not guilty when before Judge Adrian Miller in Wooster. The 20 year old faces first degree murder charges for the Fender couple robbery and the shooting of Marilyn Wagner. Watts’ attorney pleaded that proceedings were improper without a preliminary hearing, and the judge will decide later while Watts remains in Wayne County Jail. Grand jury met last week indicting Watts on murder and related shooting offenses after hearing 18 witnesses.

Wesely Johnson of Sterling is released from Wayne County Jail after a 90 day term for second degree manslaughter. He was convicted for the traffic deaths of two Creston teens last August and will serve five years of probation.

Honor Teacher At Reception May 15
Eli Stoltzfus a teacher in the Rittman School system for 18 years will be honored at a reception Sunday May 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. The reception by the Junior Class will be in the high school auditorium. All former students and friends are invited. Mr Stoltzfus is retiring after 31 years in teaching.

Collision on Ohio 9 injures two drivers
Marvin Wright 52 of Rittman and Harlan Gilker of Wadsworth collided Sunday on Ohio 9 a mile south of Wadsworth. Gilkerson auto veered off road into Wright's auto causing moderate damage to Gilker son's vehicle and minor damage to Wright's. Investigated by Ohio Highway Patrol at Medina.

Five More War Veterans Markers Are Stolen

Voters approve a charter form of government by 496 to 122. Six precincts vote 80 percent in favor. A $207,000 school bond passes 432 to 234 with near-universal support except Diversion Hall's 27-26. Chamber of Commerce launches a drive to fill a time capsule with names of Rittman citizens contributing one dollar or more to the City Landscape Fund. The aluminum foil names will be buried at the Route 94 dump site to be recovered in 2000 with a stone or bronze marker.
