Editorial urges careful turnout in a high stakes county primary. Three issues loom large for Rittman voters as candidates are narrowed for the fall general election. The piece advises readers to vote with well considered convictions.
A local charter ballot proposal would reorganize Rittman government, trimming local rules and expanding services while costing taxpayers nothing immediately. Voters face a 207000 bond request for West Hill School expansion and a 30 cent tax levy over five years to fund Sterling Creston and Burbank schools with two fire trucks sought for regional protection.
Rittman residents face a crowded primary with six candidates for two Republican County Commissioner slots, two Democrats seeking the nomination, and incumbents in key posts. Sheriff and state positions draw strong opposition with multiple nominees. Delegates to the national conventions also dominate the ballot with over 50 Democrats and 11 Republicans vying.
A 16 year old Rittman boy was placed on probation for one year in Wayne County Juvenile Court for stealing a watch. He had been jailed last week. Judge Myron T. Brenneman ordered restitution as part of the sentence.
Ak ro University football coach Joe McMullen will headline the Rittman Athletic Banquet on May 10 at the Smithville Inn. Dinner begins at 6:30 with awards and a speech to follow. tickets are sold by boosters or Williams Restaurant.
Mayor Houglan presides over a set of small fines for intoxication assault and traffic violations. Names include Richard Patterson Sterling fined 29.50 and Harold Walker Shreve 30.50 plus 19.50 for assault. Other cases cover bad muffler reckless driving leaving the scene and driving under intoxicants with fines from 5 to 105.50 and brief jail terms.
The Lions Club announces a broom sale next Monday night to support civic projects. Chairman Lee Davis says the brooms are well made and effective for spring cleaning as members canvass the town door to door selling them for two dollars.
Eighth graders and their parents are invited to the high school auditorium Monday at 7 30 p m to discuss course selection, future plans, and how to interpret students interests. Principal John R Heter leads the session with Ray Sinclair guiding the guidance discussion.
Wayne County Grand Jury probes Kenneth Watts of Rittman for the murder of Mr and Mrs Willian Fender of Warwick Ohio. Prosecutor plans to seek first degree murder and a shooting with intent to wound charge against Watts. Mrs Marilyn Wagner wounded. Watts captured near Ironton after April 16 incident.
Rittman residents react as the council forbids ice cream trucks from streets citing safety hazards from children entering roadways to greet vendors. The move accompanies other actions including street oiling advertising, pole sign restrictions, storm sewer work, and a charity for mosquito spraying.
Voters in Rittman face three major questions with heavy expected turnout. A school bond seeks 82 mills for 20 years to fund an West Hill School expansion and equipment purchases. A Charter form of government would create a Council Manager system. A 1 mill levy for Milton Township fire protection and a 3 mill levy for North Central School District carry five year terms.
At a regular meeting the Rittman Village Council unanimously endorsed the proposed charter and urged voters to approve at the upcoming election. The resolution cites home rule efficiency, continued governance after city status, reduced duplication of effort, consolidated purchasing, and better use of village resources to save taxpayer money.
Darlene Beyler of Rittman is awarded a divorce from Paul G Besler on grounds of neglect and cruelty. Beyler gains custody of their child, $50 monthly support, and title to the home. Rhonemus and Dalbey represent her. Zola Palley seeks divorce from Alvin Pollev in Wayne County Court. they were married October 7 1955 in Angola with no children. Palley accuses Pollev of drunkenness and cruelty, seeks division of property. Carl Bradford Jr. is her attorney.
A guidance note advises keeping straw on newly planted tree lawns by wetting it to speed seed germination. Moist straw aids grass growth and prevents poor establishment without proper coverage.
Rittman hosts the Wayne County District Spelling Bee Friday night at 8 in the high school auditorium. Myron Steiner chairs the event with five top contestants advancing to the Akron regional on May 20. Robert Ho Pollock of Wooster High School assists with pronunciation and a panel of judges includes several local teachers. Ralph Folula Jr. serves as master of ceremonies.
The Rittman Public Library will be closed all day April 29 to enable staff to attend the Ohio Library Association event in Granville.
