A satirical piece notes a man perched on a 100 foot smokestack for 30 hours in New Mexico. It riffs on public figures Hoover Coolidge and Cook with punchlines about prohibition, fashion costs, a London restaurant opened by a tennis star, and a dead author of How to Live 100 Years.
The Wayne County Chapter of the Iznik Walton League will meet in Wooster to organize and decide a date for Charter Night with ceremonies. Dr Gilbert Pearson of the National Audubon Societies praises cooperation with the Ohio Conservation Commission and urges junior Audubon clubs to grow in Ohio.
Walter Rice promotes a long neglected facility in Rittman by nearly completing an athletic gym behind his East Ohio avenue home. The space will feature modern equipment a first class shower bath and ample light and ventilation. A public opening date is not set but the gym will offer recreation and physical exercise for local men including boxer Frank Kitts who will train there. The project aims to boost fitness similar to the YMCA in larger towns.
Mr and Mrs John Guthrie and other grandchildren thank all who helped during the illness and death of their grandmother Mrs Payne.
A H Thomas owner of the Exall Store hires painter J Gordon to install the first neon light sign within twenty miles. The sign reads DRUGS, five and a half by two and a half feet, with neon tubes extending to eight inches. Neon gas will ignite from a 10 volt circuit stepped to 14 000 volts. Completion is expected by early next week.
Prof B Putnam of Washington D C and Ralph and Russell Putnam of Canton Ohio called on Mrs Elva Derthick last Friday. Putnam served as superintendent of the Rittman schools from 1905 to 1908 and is remembered by many residents.
The Rittman telephone exchange operators hosted a post-nuptial shower for Mrs. Carl Flath nee Violet Hoover at the telephone company offices. She received silverware as gifts. The couple will reside in Doylestown after their wedding.
Rittman high school basketball team, tri county champions, fell to Brookfield 24 to 16 in the first game of the district eliminations at Kent last Friday. Medina Lodi Brush and Fitch advance to contest for state bid next Saturday in Columbus.
The Junior class leads the Rittman High School voting contest sponsored by Rexall store, with ten points ahead of the freshmen who trail at 482. A complete tabulation of scores appears in the Rexall ad elsewhere in the paper.
Mrs Harriett Payne age 89, grandmother of Mrs John Guthrie, died Saturday in Wadsworth hospital from injuries after a fall that broke her hip. She had wintered with her granddaughter in Mishawaukee and planned to return home. funeral held at Church of Christ with Rev Van Winkle and Rev Titus officiating. Burial amid floral tributes from Rittman Cleveland and home church. Mrs Payne had been a widow eight years and was active in church work. Mrs Guthrie attended the funeral.
Louis Setgel of Elyria had filed suit against Marshal Mills and Rufus Bender in Wooster Common Pleas. The case was dismissed last Monday after Setgel’s attorney refused to guarantee court costs. The dispute began June 30, 1929, when Setgel, in Rittman, alleged an illegal arrest during a move with his moving van. The marshal argued the van was not operated in accordance with law.
Nest Tuesday evening, March 726th, an Oriental operetta will be staged at Hita Hel School. The annual show by the high school glee clubs is titled Ala Baba and the Forty Thieves with Far East costumes for cast, orchestra, and ushers. Mr Rodda, music instructor in the Rittman schools, coaches the cast and orchestra.
An analysis traces the panic to easy money policy from 1927, prompting widespread speculation and rising prices. It notes a Federal Reserve clampdown, credit strain, and a crash that depressed prices, with a recovery expected to begin as the economy climbs again in coming years.
Rittman High School debaters lost to Creston High School in a recent meet held in Creston. The question was whether trial before a judge should be substituted by trial by petit jury in the United States. Rittman fielded Dorthn Frank, Mart Longer, ecker, Wether Spade, and Thlea Steiner with Captain Ulaney as coach. Creston appeared particularly strong, with Sodthelile also winning in a separate contest.
Announcement of the marriage of Ruth Claybough of Rowadhead Ohio and Pearl Kowyer formerly of Belle Canter. The ceremony took place in Wooster at the MIS parsonage last Saturday with a single ring ceremony conducted by Rev Molin. Attendants were Mya Lawrence Wimot of Rittman and Mrs Wilmot a sister of the bride. Congratulations from friends.
A birthday dinner was held at the Raymond Raff residence last Sunday for Mrs Raff. Miss Latte Jordan of Sterling attended as an out of town guest. Pleasant entertainment followed the dinner hour.
Road grading in Rittman has started as warm weather arrives. Street Commissioner Ike Overbolt and crew work to smooth dirt roads and streets before more bad weather. Ohio Ave and Grain Street show noticeable improvements already.
Rittman council votes 3 1 against a gas rate increase proposed by Ohio Fuel Oak company. The plan would raise charges to 1.00 for the first 1000 cubic feet and 1.00 for additional 1000 feet for two years, then 3.60. Citizens protested fearing higher rates. council cited unsettled economy and downward wage trends. An ordinance set the lowest rate among adjacent towns as the local rate.
