Scout waste paper drive set for Easter Saturday

Boy Scouts of Rittman announce bi monthly waste paper collection on March 27 before Easter to raise funds for their troops. Last drive yielded about $60 in scrap proceeds. Mrs P M Hawkins returned from Tennessee admiring spring blooms.

Easter Sunrise Services Planned by Rittman Churches

Interdenominational Easter sunrise service will be held on the west side of the football field at 6 a.m. with a 45 minute program. The high school Girls Sextette will provide music and an Easter breakfast will follow. Several local church groups plan to meet after the program.

Kindergarten pupils collect clothes for needy children

Rittman elementary students joined a Save the Children drive to gather clothing for destitute youngsters. Seventeen children helped fill 18 bags with shoes sweaters jackets and other garmets to be shipped and distributed by CARE’s Save the Children program to needy children domestically and abroad.

Eight Page Photo Section Debuts in The Press

Rittman Coffee Shop Changes Hands New Management

Lewis Hana and Chester Clup of Barberton have purchased the Rittman Coffee Shop on S Main St from Bertha Gasser. The new owners took over Monday and will operate seven days a week with Mrs Schmidt cooking. An ex service man, Mr Schmidt, and their two children plan to move to Rittman soon.

Legion Hosts Television Show at Legion Hall

The American Legion post entertained wives and friends with a TV show at the Legion Hall on Tuesday evening March 16. The program featured a women's wrestling bout between Mildred Burke and Elvora Snodgrass televised from Cleveland. Sandwiches and coffee were served and a weekly show is planned each Tuesday after meetings. All ex servicemen are invited. the hall hosts TV, dancing and cards Saturdays and a television set prize is being solicited for May 29.

Credit Rating List For Merchants In Rittman

The Chamber of Commerce plans a merchant credit rating list to be available citywide. Secretary J W Frye says Robert Graber handles most details and aims for completion by April 1. Don Beery attended the recreation board meeting. chamber will support recreation programs but not sponsor a team. Street department received compliments for clearing last snowfall on the main streets.

Free Northland Movie At Rittman High School

The Rittman Chamber of Commerce offers a free 8:30 p.m. Wednesday screening of Escape to the North, a Canada filmed nature tour from the Great Lakes to Hudson Bay. Col W W Johnson will present, arranged by Harold Rich. He also plans showings in Wadsworth.

Ed Musser Assigned April Police Duty for Sheriff Campaign

Ed Musser will perform special police duty in April to relieve Glenn Rike who campaigns for the Republican nomination for Wayne County sheriff. Musser was hired by the Cemetery Board gas caretaker to succeed O M Spade who has resigned.

Railroad Crossing Hearing Scheduled at Council Meeting

Solicitor C E Rhonemug announced that a representative of the Ohio State Public Utilities Commission will attend the Monday evening council meeting to hear complaints about railroad crossings in Rittman. Representatives of the Brie and B&O railroads will be present to discuss issues. citizens with concerns are urged to attend at 8 p.m.

Work Begins On Bauman Orchard To Develop Area

Work started Wednesday to remove about 250 trees in the Bauman orchard to prepare building sites. Bennie Bauman and Owen Landis handle the work while Howard Dailey and J. W. Frye act as agents to lay out and sell 53 lots on 13 acres bounded by W Ohio Ave. FHA verbal approval for home loans is sought, with utilities and street grading hoped by end of May.

New Store Building Breaks Ground on N Main Street

Ground was broken this week for a new store building on N Main Street on the north side of the Schaefer building. The Schaefer Co plans a two story addition with leases signed for occupants on both the ground and second floors. Owen Landis handles excavation using a new power shovel. W H Parkinson expects completion in about 90 days.
