The May 3 vote will decide if Rittman is governed by a Municipal Charter. The Rittman Press publishes the charter text in full, detailing Council powers, meeting rules, and name and boundaries of the municipality.
Orrville and nearby communities report a physician returning home after two weeks hospital stay and a doctor expected to be off work for a month. Other items note a White Elephant sale by the Merry Mixers Club, St Patrick’s Day refreshments, a traffic incident involving Mrs Walker, Max Wright admitted to Orrville Osteopathic Hospital, Band Calendar Drive planning, spring flower show program ideas, seed exchange, student contest honors, an adoption announcement, Pack 3400 meeting, Frederick Willems in Morocco with the Air Force, Delta Club meeting, Daughters of America gathering, census taker needs in Rittman and Milton Township.
Services were held for J Ralph West 69 who died Friday after a long illness. Born in Loda Illinois he lived in Lakewood then moved to Rittman 25 years ago. He worked 26 years for Morton Salt Company ending as night superintendent. Survived by wife Elsa two sons Robert of Rit and Richard of Palos Park a brother Chester and six grandchildren. Burial followed in Rittman with Rev Donald Bowser officiating.
Rittman could be excluded from a proposed Milton Township fire protection levy to be voted at the May election, but solicitor Rhonemus and council may keep the tax on Rittman to aid Sterling’s fire department. The levy would yield about $12,000 if Rittman is dropped, while Milton Township needs about $45,000 for two new fire trucks. Council debated fairness and asked trustees to meet. other actions included zoning talks, police training, pension refund, and February receipts.
Wooster Federation of Wo mens Clubs invites all clubwomen to the District VI Legislation meeting March 23 at the Wooster YMCA. Registrations begin 8:45 a.m. A morning session features speakers on Problems of Education and Divorce Laws. Afternoon topics cover Gerontology and Politics. Meeting adjourns 3 p.m.
Mrs. Clayton Kunkler resigns as assistant village clerk after being denied overtime pay for Saturday work. An ordinance approved 5-1 increases her salary to $283 monthly with no overtime. Councilman Ashton Hall opposed, calling it a bad precedent for individual pay deals.
The wives of Frank Skraba and Clifford Thonen face charges for attempting to coerce a 16 year old grand jury witness amid an attempted robbery and police shooting. Thonen also charged with harboring Skraba. Skraba held for grand jury action. Thonen out on 10000 dollar bond. wives released on 2000 dollar bonds each.
The Chippewa Watershed Association wins official recognition from a 16 judge panel in New Philadelphia to form a Muskingum Conservancy District subdistrict. Wayne County Judge Adrian W. Miller and Medina Judge Windsor Kellogg will oversee plans and financing as federal and state funds commit about 1.64 million dollars for nine proposed dams with local needs urged.
Bloodmobile Day in Rittman is Wednesday with 186 donors signed up under the American Legion Auxiliary. Drive chairwoman Mrs Ray Varisco urges pledged donors to keep appointments and notes walk ins are welcome from noon to 6 pm at the American Legion Hall. The annual PTA Minstrel Show comes to Rittman high school auditorium Friday and Saturday March 18 and 19 at 8 p m. The two hour program features Hillbilly Heaven a 20 minute skit written by Sue Maple and a second act with Chuck McCoy as interlocutor and a 40 member chorus directed by Ada Davis.
The Rittman Council approved placing the municipal charter issue on the May 3 ballot. If voters approve, the charter form of government will take effect December 5, 1960. The Charter Commission has prepared the legislation for home rule. The Rittman Press will publish the charter text and mail a booklet to every eligible voter before April 1.
Violet Davis of Rittman has filed for divorce from William Davis in Wayne County Common Pleas Court citing cruelty and neglect. Married in 1958 in Sterling, they have one child. Davis seeks custody child support and alimony with attorney Carl Bradford Jr. of Rhonemus and Dalbey representing her.
