Last week Rit Juan High School hosted a science fair with 210 participants from elementary to high school levels. Librarian Mary Jane Frey assisted many by supplying research materials and a notable request from students seeking books to construct an atom bomb.
The Rittman Press awarded eight discovery certificates and two trophies to students for science fair work. Junior awards went to Far Beery and senior honors to Brad Bodager. Certificates recognized meaningful scientific effort from multiple students across grades.
The annual Easter Eye Hunt will take place Saturday March 25 at First Street Park Central Park with kickoff at 1 30 PM. Prizes are offered in two age groups and the Rittman Volunteer Firemen sponsor the event with the Firemen's Auxiliary helping prepare eggs. Dave Hill leads the event and a rain date is planned for Sunday March 26 at the same time and location.
The Rittman Board of Education heard that fear of higher taxes likely defeated the school bond issue. Of 602 replies from 1700 mailed, 118 cited tax increases as the main reason, with other responses noting grade-school emphasis and plans as factors. Precinct results showed overall support for the bond, though consolidation fears and location concerns also appeared.
Tickets for the PTA Palace event are on sale at J W Ierge Company Stepfield Pharmacy Otts Beauty Salon and at the door Thursday Friday and Saturday evenings. Curtain at 8 pm. Adults 105 children 50 cents. The Roaming 20s act will perform with new touches and Mel Goffinet Swami honors. A tribute to the song Take Me Out to the Ball Game will be staged. Previous scholarship winners were Francine Sheampsen, Fi Binta, Marviet Grant. Sunset winner Francey is at Miami University Oxford majoring in elementary education.

Maurice Hurt, a former Rift man and cab driver in Norfolk, was stabbed and robbed after picking up a passenger. He was found unconscious by the Shore Patrol and hospitalized with leg and neck wounds, a pierced lung, and injuries to the face. His sister, Mrs. Robert Blackburn, reports four to six weeks of incapacitation. a suspect has been detained but ID is pending.
Four junior girls were named American Legion Auxiliary delegates to Buckeye Girls State at Capital University in Columbus. Carolyn Jensen, Joyce Beery, and Cheryl Stone and another student were chosen for the program, which runs June 17 to 24 and seeks to educate on government.
The Reading council heard a 30 page zoning ordinance on Monday night. Mayor Ashton Hall and Ed Alu proved a point about finding business outside council chambers. A second public hearing will occur before final passage.
Andres Lambert, 67, who vanished August 3, 1965, has been found and is back with his family in Riftman. Daughters Anne and Reva Moyer said they were grateful, while details say a friend spotted Lambert in New Castle, Pa. County officials and neighbors report Lambert is well and home with three grandchildren.
The article notes two missing residents from Rittman. Weigley, a 35 year old bricklayer, vanished Aug. 4 1965 after leaving Dalton High School. The second, Sandra Sassano a 17 year old runaway, disappeared two days before Christmas 1965 from 232 Baker Drive.
