Old Betsy Fire Truck Leaves Rittman After Era

Tears mark the retirement of the 1927 era fire truck known as Old Betsy as it ends 35 years of service in Rittman. Edward Kaline of Lodi plans to restore the 750 gallon pumper for display, seeking frame proof from Seagrave to claim historical plates. The truck may return for Homecoming if the town parade resumes.

Richard Williams New Board Clerk for Doylestown

Richard Williams was hired as the new two year probationary village and school board clerk with a salary of 2800 dollars per year, replacing Richard Bryan who resigned after eight years. Dr Philip Gilcrest and two others were named to study clerk business manager needs with a report due within 900 days. Walter Adair became part time school janitor replacing Arnold Fielder who is hospitalized. An adult education typing class is full taught by James Bow with class time 8 to 9 pm Tuesdays starting next week. A Band Parents rep asked for a pay phone outside the bandroom. the board will study the issue.

Patrolman Hall Resigns from Rittman Police Force

Patrolman Charles Hall will resign from the Rittman Police Department on April 1 to join the West Virginia State Patrol. He served five months on the local force after working at Packaging Corporation. Applications for the vacant position are being screened, with civil service exams required for new hires.

Soap Box Derby Meeting Tuesday

All boys aged 11 to 15 inclusive are invited to a preliminary clinic at the Junior Achievement Building on Tuesday March 20 at 7 30 p m. Local representative Vernon Hoskinson says Derby Director Hadley Jewell of Wooster will attend for registration, instructions, rule books and rule changes. Age is determined as of Aug 1 1962.

Rittman High School Band under Gene Sharick placed in three divisions at Kent State University contest. Superior I standings went to a quartet of Mari lyn Laurer Elizabeth Hostetler Lin da Parman and Sharon Steiner. flute quartet earned II far excellent with Bette Lance Janie Pyle Marsha Harris and Mary Jane Housé. Solo division saw David Fry earn III on snare m. Choralettes under Carolyn Warren saved a superior. Lee Girl's Junior Ensemble rating II. Marsha Harris, soprano soloist, placed II.

Local Cancer Drive Names Chairmen for 1962 Crusade

Mrs. John Walker and Mrs. Herald Mougey will head the 1962 Cancer Drive in Rittman with a house to house canvass starting April 5 and a county goal of 18000 dollars. Wayne County units report 55 ongoing needy cancer cases and urge full participation of team captains to meet the goal. Louis T. Carter, county campaign chairman, notes cancer education outreach to Wooster area schools and urges talks on smoking and lung cancer to PTA groups and other organizations.

Rittman Board weighs pay hike for superintendent and teachers

The Rittman Board of Education considered a salary committee recommendation to raise the superintendent by 700 dollars and boost teachers with five or more years of service by 100 dollars. Pro-rated raises for teachers with extra duties were not decided. Final action was delayed to next week. The meeting also noted the High School library fell short of state standards and other routine items were approved or discussed.

Gas Main Upgrade Under Way In Downtown Area

Ohio Fuel Gas Company manager Glenn Parman says a 311 foot six inch gas main is being installed on West Ohio Avenue to tie into a four inch line behind the post office. The project costs 4000 dollars and should be completed this weekend.

Mother Of Local Woman Is Buried

Services for Mrs. Lois E. Gantz 80 of Creston mother of Rittman teacher Jeannette Glasgow were in Jackson United Presbyterian Church. She died after a three year illness, was a Wayne County life resident and former Creston librarian. She leaves another daughter Margaret Moyer and six grandchildren. Burial was in the church cemetery with Rev. O Sloan Whitacre officiating.

Press Reporter Aids Five-Year-Old In Medical Rescue

Rittman reporter Mrs George Sandrock saved a five year old at West Hill School when Lanny Salisbury seized in a classroom. She performed artificial respiration learned at a PCA demonstration. The child, suffering from fever related pneumonia, was transported to Children's Hospital Akron in fair condition with Dr William Walker supervising. Principal Miriam Roth and teacher Ruth Zimmerly assisted until the doctor arrived.

PCA Receives Ohio Safety Award For 1961 Record

The Packaging Corporation of America earned a certificate from the Industrial Commission of Ohio for an outstanding safety record in 1961. Ivan King accepted the award at a Brookside Country Club banquet in Norton attended by 200 executives from 26 area firms, with PCA safety director Glen Butler presiding.

Still Seek Location For A New Street

Planning Commission and Board of Education revived a two year old issue seeking a new street to connect the Saurer Allotment with West Sunset Drive. Badager Agency representing the developers asked Council two years ago for entry to West Sunset between Metzger Ave and Cemetery Road. Council met with West Sunset property owners to find a low cul-de-sac.

Nancy Griffith Named American Legion Auxiliary Girls' State Delegate

Nancy Griffith a Rittman High School junior was named Monday as American Legion Auxiliary delegate to Girls' State with Marsha Harris as her alternate She will spend four weeks at Capitol University in June learning government through rallies mock elections and a mock government Nancy holds multiple school offices and participates in clubs and church youth programs The text also notes local planning and road issues with the Saurer Allotment street proposal facing school age safety and funding concerns as the Board of Education and Planning Commission delayed final action after joint and regular sessions
