Wayne County Primary Ballots Contract Awarded

The Rittman Press won the Wayne County election board printing contract for primary ballots. The bid was 2992 dollars, beating Collier Printing at 3320 dollars.

A drive to raise 1600 dollars to operate the Boy Scout movement in Rittman will be held during the last two weeks of the month. Russ Lewis, chairman, notes no drive has been held in three years as the program grows requiring more equipment. Rittman has four units with about 120 active boys and a luncheon on March 10 will finalize plans and announce more details next week.

Polio Vaccine Clinic Here Next Wednesday

The second of three Sabin polio oral vaccine clinics will be held in Rittman and Wayne County on March 14 and 17, at Rittman High School from 1 to 7 p.m. The 75 percent Wayne County first-dose rate leads the nation. The cost for the second round is 25 cents for adults and free for children. those missing type I should take type II next, as Sabin vaccine does not require sequence.

Judy Pittman daughter of Mr and Mrs Virgil Pittman of RD Rittman has been elected a delegate to Girls State The Rittman High School junior was selected by the Lions Club as their representative Barb Hauenstein was selected alternate The other representative to Girls State will be selected next week by the American Legion Auxiliary Judy is active in school having been a member of the band three years girls chorus two years mixed chorus three years president of the Latin Club intramurals and student assistant in the library.

Saturday Minstrel Show Might Sell Out Early

Tickets for the ninth annual PTA Minstrel Show are selling fast says ticket chairman Joe Powers. Indications point to a sellout for the Saturday March 17 performance with three night run and presale through Sunday. Remaining tickets will be at Wright Drug Store Stepfield's Pharmacy and Rich Motors until show night. Those planning to attend are urged to choose Thursday or Friday to ensure a seat. Performances start promptly at 8 p.m.

Petitions Seek Signing Of Chippewa Fire Contract

Chippewa Township trustees heard petitions from 148 residents urging signing of a fire contract with Rittman Lawrence Wilmot and Ralph Cline. Rittman City Council had submitted a contract in January but no official acceptance yet. An attorney studies the agreement while residents southeast of Rittman lack adequate protection due to distance from Doylestown station.

Trustees Approve Fire Protection Contract in Milton Township

Trustees signed a mutual fire protection contract with Canaan Township and the City of Rittman after a Tuesday meeting. They negotiate a similar deal with Guilford Township while a $19,095 fire truck from Supplien Equipment Co of Columbus was approved. Wayne County Trustees and Clerks Association meet April 2 at Norwayne High School with President Paul Billings to speak and the Rittman High School band performing.

County Building Code Hearing Slated In Wayne County

A Wayne County hearing is set for 8 pm next Thursday at the Courthouse to discuss a proposed building code for one to three family dwellings. The first draft, prepared with a planning expert, aims for minimum standards and will be self supporting after year one.

The Rittman city records show a slow start to 1962 with only three building permits issued through February, including two in January and one in February. January costs totaled $45,000 and February $15,600, contrasting with six permits and higher early-year activity in 1961.

Death of John Shuff 87 in Salem Virginia

John Shuff 87 of Salem Virginia father of Mrs Walter Keating died suddenly at his home on Thursday March 1. He was well known in Rittman where he had many friends. Surviving are his wife a son four daughters 18 grandchildren 36 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Burial was Saturday in Salem Virginia.

Rittman Man Sentenced for Scrap Metal Theft

Robert Boyce was sentenced to the Ohio State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to stealing 4300 dollars worth of scrap metal from Packaging Corporation salvage yard. He had a prior term for non support.

Mrs Verona D Smith 73 of 179 South Main Street died Tuesday after a short illness at home. Born in Fairborn Greene County she lived in Covington and Sabina after moving from Columbus 30 years ago. Former Owner Joins Berea Publishing as GM

Ames G Battenfield, ex co owner of the Rittman Press, becomes vice president and general manager at Berea Publishing Company in Berea Ohio. Napier Found Guilty of Assault by Wayne County Court

Raymond Napier was found guilty by Wayne County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday for assaulting James Hebb a 24 year old resident of Smithville. Judge Adrian Miller revoked Napier’s bond and ordered him held in county jail pending probation department investigation after a jury deliberation of under one hour.
