Local notes mix birthday greetings for Roy Welling and a stream of community items. A drug awareness program at Rittman High School featured inmates from the Mansfield Reformatory including Doug Sunshine and panelists Tony Solaro and Dr. Roland Burelli. Sunshine described his descent from a regular kid to heroin use and crime, while Solaro and Burelli stressed honest dialogue with youth, early signs of drug use, and the need for preventive education.
City staff discussed security oriented upgrades for the Police Department including a step up phone system and a revised wall setup in the office to improve heating cooling and visibility. Councils considered new chambers seating and a plan to notify residents about phone number changes coordinated with new stickers and upcoming phone books.
Rittman Fire Department and Police identify a Rittman High School girl who made a bomb threat by phone Friday at 12 25 pm. She is in the temporary custody of her parents.
Richland County detectives arrested Butler man William Homer Sampsel at a friends house in Rittman. He faces possession of marijuana charges and possible smuggling counts in the Cleveland Federal District Court. After local charges, he will be returned to the Army for military charges.
