Foam packaging operation in Frederick Maryland, formerly run by Corning Glass Works, has been acquired by Packaging Corporation of America. The company already runs foam plants in Madison Wisconsin and Vincennes Indiana.
The 1970 census reports Wayne County population 87,123 up 15.4 percent from 1960. White residents total 85,592, with 1,372 Black residents and 159 others. Household counts reach 25,053 with 25,907 housing units and 70.3 percent owner occupancy. Median home value is 17,300 and median rent 76 dollars.
Erin Lynne Smithwick died at birth on Thursday. Graveside services were held Monday at Winona Lake with Rev. Charles Ashman officiating. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smithwick of Winona Lake, a brother Robby, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Maine of Rittman.
United Telephone Company of Ohio reports Wooster center handled 5 913 600 long distance calls in 1970 an 11 2 percent rise from 1969. July was the peak month with 526 500 calls while February fell to 418 600. The firm plans nearly 2 million dollars in 1971 upgrades. The World Telephones data show the U S totals dominate world phone counts with 115 2 million phones about 45 percent of the world total. Ohio towns show varying per capita phones.
Morton Salt veteran Maynard Wagner retired after 28 years of service, moving from Rittman in 1940 and joining the company on September 8 1941. He began as a laborer and earned his present post in October 1946. Wagner urges younger workers to advance through hard work, and he and wife Mabel attend St Michaels Lutheran Church in Marshallville. They live at 84 Ganyard Street and plan to visit Florida for fishing.
Wooster senator James K. Leedy asks the Public Utilities Commission to investigate United Telephone Co. of Ohio, seeking public hearings in his district including Rittman and ensuring refunds or improvements after nearly nine million dollars in rate increases. He cites poor service, misdirected dialing, and failed promises as evidence of a David and Goliath style struggle to force accountability.
Columbia Gas System aims to spend more than 1 billion dollars to expand gas supplies and deliverability this year. CEO C. E Loomis and executives forecast growth with 1970 as the 17th year of record earnings and sales, noting continued demand for clean burning gas and potential new sources including offshore Louisiana, Appalachia drilling, Arctic gas, LNG imports, and coal gas projects.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Doylestown Fire Station No 2 met on Tuesday February 16 at 7 30 p m at Mrs Ralph Armstrongton s home. Ten members attended. Door prizes were won by Mrs James Lieberth and Mrs Ken Sanders both born in February. The next meeting is set for March 16 at 7 30 p m at Mrs Dan Firis s home.
Joseph Huff 68 of 110 N State Street Rittman died March 2 after a long illness at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital. Funeral arrangements are being made at Gillman’s Funeral Home.
Inmates from Ohio State Reformatory Mansfield in a drug rehabilitation program will speak at the City Wide Drug Meet on Thursday March 4 at 8 pm in Rittman High School auditorium. They will join a Rotary luncheon panel and a later student discussion with local officials and professionals.
John S. Mooradian of Guilford Road Rittman has been named manager of administration in Babcock and Wilcox nuclear equipment. Akron native, Buchtel High School 1942 graduate, University of Akron BS in mechanical engineering 1958. Mooradian joined B and W 1953 rising to nuclear components specialist 1959 project manager 1968 assistant manager 1969 staff assistant 1970. He is married to Eunice Lancaster. they have two sons Paul and David.
The Chamber of Commerce will host a luncheon on Tuesday March 9 at Williams Restaurant. Officers from the Rittman police department will present security tactics for local stores, followed by a seminar on small claims courts led by Tom Flynn, detailing procedures and court effectiveness.
