Oberlin PTA President Tells Of Teaching Negro Students

Mrs A J Grant, president of the Oberlin Parent-Teacher Association, recalls teaching a grade school class with nearly half colored children. She learned to call each student by name after initial difficulty recognizing individuals. Born near Orrville, she studied at Smithville, Baldwin Wallace, and Kent State, taught in Oberlin and Smithville, and now resides with her husband in Rittman where he works at Ohio Salt. She chairs the Recreational Program Committee aiming to boost Rittman’s community activity.

Death by Own Action Near Wadsworth

Leonard A Willis, 48, of 301 S Lyman St, Wadsworth, killed himself with a 22 caliber pistol in a parked car east of town. Henry Long and Clyde Spain discovered the body after delivering mail and alerted the sheriff and coroner. Willis left a wife, an eight month old daughter, his mother Mrs Mary W Willis and three brothers. The coroner ruled death by own action. News follows from Rittman Press.

Rites Tuesday for Mrs Hardgrove

Funeral services for Mrs Alpha Sardgrove aged 64 were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 at the family home on West Second Street conducted by Rev J Mc Gee. Burial followed in the Rittman Cemetery. In charge of A Libbert. Mrs Hardgrove died at 3 45 Saturday morning after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband Warren and four sons Réno Cletus Basil and Fedex plus many grandchildren.

Infant Rudolph Hartzler, son of Mr and Mrs John Hartzler of Rittman and RD, was buried Tuesday morning at 1:30 o clock in Abbottville cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of A L Bert.

Mrs Poe Funeral Friday At Tiffin

Funeral services for Mrs Emma Jane Poe 80 mother of Charles Poe will be held Friday at 1 pm at her daughter Mrs RE Dennison in Tiffin with a church service in Van Buren and burial there Rev Fr Hendrickson of Milton Presbyterian Church will officiate She died of a heart attack in the cemetery at Van Buren while attending a nephew's burial She lived with her son in Rittman and is survived by two children and several grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements for Charles Camp noted in Ashland

The report states Charles Camp was in charge of funeral arrangements which were held Friday night at his mother Mrs George Camp home in Ashland then at the church in Red Haw with burial in the church cemetery. Mr Camp is survived by his widow, his mother Mrs Camp and several children.

Rittman Indians coached by Tibby Young win the Ashland sectional tourney with a 51-22 victory over Shreve in the opening round and a 47-35 win over Nova in the second round to earn a spot at Kent. Mrs Roy Qualman Named New Librarian

At a meeting of the Rittman library committee Mrs Toy Qualman was chosen as public library librarian to replace Miss Mollie Behl who resigned for a college teaching position. Substitutes Carroll Graf and Elizabeth Wiles had filled in recently. Chairman Kenneth Osborne announced the committee vote.

Mystery assailant chases suspect through Rittman area

Mor, described as a Ramboror, fled across Main Street after Marshal Aind fired to stop him. Authorities, aided by firemen and Boy Scouts, scoured Chippewa swamp for hours while Weggeman of a Barton ham radio station relayed word to the sheriff. Mor reportedly used an assumed name and owed debts to other businesses as villagers tracked the man.
