The Ohio Boxboard team edged the Firemen 33 26 at the high school gym. Denny led with 15 points on five field goals and five free throws, while Grimes scored 11 for the Firemen. Officials drew sharp criticism as both teams used football tactics in a non league game.
Marilyn Beauty Shoppe has relocated to Branigan Ridge area near Barnard-Hamilton Co. Store. Entrance is at the rear of the building south of the dance hall. The move accommodates growing business and space needs.
In a packed Rittman High School gym the Union Trust of Cleveland edged Pierce Boxboard of Akron 36 to 34 in a fast, balanced contest. Pierce owner C A Pierce challenged for a rematch. Trust manager accepted. Earlier, the Rittman Fire Department lost to Ohio Boxboard 33 to 26 in a rough, slow city title game.
Honor roll compiled for the second six weeks shows students across grades two to junior high. Names include Anna Adams Dorothy Aurand Barbara Barker Vivian Clarke June Wald Dean Brenneman Clair Brickel and others across fourth and fifth grades plus junior high honorees.
A card from Rittman announces the birth of twin daughters Dorothy Arleen and Patricia Anne to Mr and Mrs Bill Stauffer now of Wilmington Delaware. Dorothy Arleen weighed 6 pounds 9 and Patricia Anne 5 pounds 12 ounces. Mr Stauffer formerly worked at The Ohio Salt Co about six years ago and is now a chemist with Du Pont Powder Co in Wilmington Delaware.
Local heavyweight Frank Kitts meets Wild Bil Raley in a six round semi final at the Akron Armory on March 1. Promoter Lucy Welch promises a card packed with action headlined by Gorilla Jones versus Mayor Grace in a ten round welterweight clash.
Florence Adams ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs H B Adams was taken to Wadsworth hospital Sunday evening and operated on Monday morning for a mastoid by Dr Protection of Akron assisted by Shong of Rittman. She is resting fairly well at this time. Mia Adams stayed with her Monday.
The girls glee club of Rittman High School met last Monday at Katherine Bender’s home in West Ohio. Each girl performed an entertainment piece, followed by refreshments. Officers for the semester are Alma Ashbrook president Katherine Bender vice president and Julia Pavlic secretary treasurer.
Mrs. A H Thomas hosted the Olla Podrida Club meeting Tuesday afternoon. Miss McWethy county health nurse spoke on the county health board and urged citizen cooperation. Guests included the Ladies Auxiliary to the American Legion and the Chill Conservation League. Mrs. Thomas and helpers served sandwiches tea and a green and white menu.
The Lilly and Hummel families extend heartfelt thanks to all who helped during the bereavement of their daughter and sister who passed away February 26. Special thanks to the Girl and Boy Scouts and Rev. Hendrickson for their part. Loyd Lilly Daisy Lilly Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Hummel.
The Rittman High School glee clubs set March 26 for the annual operetta The boys and girls rehearse The Oriental operetta Ath Baba and the Forty Thieves. Costumes and East styling are prepared for performers and ushers. Mr Rodda coaches the East orchestra.
Mrs Harriette Payne, grandmother of Mrs John Guthrie, fell Tuesday morning at her granddaughter’s home and sustained a broken hip. She was taken to Willworth hospital for X ray confirmation and will return to Mishinaka, Indiana after recovery.
Rev Hendrickson attends a Cleveland Presbytery Christian Education Committee meeting on Monday focusing on men’s work. He is an association member. Plans for a men’s gathering March 14 across the Presbytery were discussed.
A birthday party was held for Billy Petkoaff turning five. Five friends attended: Julia Gavinsky, Marjorie Tybill, Nighgh Borich, Lulu Borich, Eva Fedix. Ice cream and cake were served as guests departed wishing many more happy birthdays.
The Rural-Urban Acquaintance Committee of the local Rotary club selected Cashier Hunsléker of Dalton to speak at noon this Thursday. He discussed the nation’s distressing financial condition and warned of no immediate relief, noting Rittman factories run at full capacity. His talk drew attentive listening, though some felt the setting was not ideal for his message.
Ruth Lilly daughter of Loyd and Esther Lilly was born December 7 1913 in Rittman Ohio and died February 26 1930 at age 16 years 2 months 19 days. Survived by father two sisters Dorothy Stomnel and Miss Casey Billy and two grandmothers Bernbaker Seville and Lilly near Wooster plus relatives and friends. An honor pupil who gave up school due to illness she cherished Girl Scout work and faith in her Savior.
Henry Smoyer long time janitor of the Rittman kindergarten was honored by four teachers after school Friday for his loyalty and cheerful work on his 73rd birthday. He received a present and provided ice cream and cake for the celebration.
The County Health Department announces a weighing for eight children at the High Beaufort Building on Thursday March 13. The weighing is conducted twice a month and is considered beneficial to the children.
An alltime French custom marked a Mardi Gras party Tuesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Goffinet. Seventy three guests attended fifteen tables of progressive Cajun style games. High prizes went to Mrs. Joseph McKines and Ardel Moline, console prizes to Mrs. Reno Hardgrove and Edward Woyat. Mrs. D W Brodbeck and Mrs A E Goffinet hosted, with Lichway serving.
Sanwel Rokich of Akron received a 100 dollar fine and costs for driving while intoxicated in Rittman. His companion, also from Akron, pled guilty and was fined five dollars plus costs after arraignment before Mayor Hanes. The report notes 100 dollars is the minimum fine for intoxication.
The proprietor of Kaufman Department Store nears completing a deal to transfer ownership to two Cleveland men who will become the new owners of the store.
Mayor Hanes chaired a long council session with roll call. The body debated taxing and accepting Grand View Boulevard, details of sidewalk work, water access for Fisher allotment, and a planned track discussion with railroad and gas company reps.
The Community Basketball League wraps up with a planned Tuesday evening matchup between United Cigars and Firemen who are tied for first. Boxboard and Snyder Drug squads also scheduled to play that night.
Dr. C. C. Gregg attended the annual Cleveland Dental Society meeting Monday at Hotel Statler. He gave a clinic on the technique of releasing and refitting upper and lower dental plates to members and visiting dentists.
