Ashland and Rittman notes report Indians winning first round in a local event as four houses rise above ground in Rittman. Images preview more home building ideas with future pages promising additional houses and basement work continued after a busy Friday and Saturday.
Rittman council discusses a DDT mosquito spray program with private funding options and municipal handling. Fire chief to prepare a cost estimate for a new fire truck as a five man committee backs replacement.
In Rittman a slapping contest led to penalties from Mayor Melvin R. Ritter. Miss Adam Van Hoose paid a $5 fine with a suspended $5 and one year probation after insult accusations by Perlie Maynard. Maynard faced $25 plus costs and one year probation for retaliation. Other cases include Daniel Starcher fined $10 and costs for driving without a license, Chester Culp fined $5 and costs for playing a musical instrument after 11 pm, and Donald K. Carson fined $5 and costs for failing to stop at a rural intersection.
Rittman Indians defeated Shreve High 52 to 43 in the District Class B Tournament first round. Neal Milford led with 25 points as Rittman outscored Shreve in each quarter and will face Loudonville in the semi finals at Ashland. Sterling High fell 53 to 61 to Loudonville as the Loudonville defense edged ahead after a 17 all tied first period.
Rittman officials announce a new grade school project with 12 classrooms and potential play room. Bids total 336 780 for general construction plumbing heating and electrical work within the 370 000 bond balance. Architect Spahn Barnes Cleveland to review bids and present recommendations at a special board meeting.
Mrs Anna Garrad 48 died at home 101 North State St Rittman after a four month illness. Survived by husband Albert a daughter Roberta Ott 231 W Circuit and son Robert of Orrville. Rites Saturday 10 am at St Ann's Church Rev Father J T Farrell in charge. Burial Calvary Cemetery Mt Vernon. Friends may call Gillman funeral home Friday evening prayers 8 30.
Mr and Mrs E J Brophy of 181 N First Street left yesterday for a vacation in Coral Gables Florida.
Nine Doylestown and three Sterling high students will compete in the Wayne County High School Literary contest at Doylestown High School on Saturday March 5 starting at 8 45 a.m. About 75 to 100 contestants from county high schools expected.
Verna Orr transfers 89 acres in Chippewa township to James F Petit. Wayne County Auditor deeds one lot in Rittman to LeRoy and Norma Campbell. Doyle D. Pfouts and Agnes C. Pfouts deed one lot in Cres ton village to Adam E. and Nellie D. Farnwatt.
About 45 volunteers began canvassing 1 000 families for Red Cross membership. Rittman aims for 1 500 dollars with the drive ending March 15. Early solicitations drew an excellent response, says co chairwoman Mrs W W Bodager on Thursday.

Mrs Basil M Hardgrove and daughter Cheryl of 30 W Liberty Street depart Saturday for a Florida vacation. Also traveling are Mrs W W Baker of 133 West Hill Avenue and Miss Evelyn Baker of Akron for a seaside holiday.
